51N4E werten Konventionen und Erwartungshaltungen
um, verschieben und brechen sie – die
Architekten aus Brüssel planen und bauen nicht
nur nach Vorgaben, sondern produzieren ihre
eigenen Räume. Sie verschieben gezielt Vorgaben
der Auftraggeber, um Reibung zu erzeugen. Das
Ziel: Kommunikation. Im kürzlich fertig gestellten
LAMOT-Kulturzentrum in Mechelen vergrößerten
sie zum Beispiel – abweichend von der ursprünglichen
Wettbewerbsausschreibung – die Kontaktzone
mit der Öffentlichkeit, in ihrem Masterplan
für Genk, eine der wenigen belgischen Städte ohne
historische Mitte, wendeten sie sich gegen die Idee
der Stadtpolitik, eben ein solches mittelalterliches
Zentrum zu erfinden – und andersherum planen
sie von Anfang an mit ein, dass sich ihr Entwurf für
ein Hochhaus im albanischen Tirana den örtlichen
Gegebenheiten im Laufe des Baus anpassen wird.
Der stadtbildende Prozess, hier lebt er. 51N4E redefine
conventions and expectations, giving them
different priorities and breaking them. Indeed, the
Brussels architects do not just plan and build things
according to what has been stipulated. Rather, they
produce their own spaces, purposefully modifying
their clients’ specifications in order to create friction.
Their aim: communication. In the recently
completed LAMOT Cultural Centre in Mechelen, for
instance, they diverged from the stipulations of the
contract they were awarded and enlarged the area
intended for serving the public. In their master plan
for Genk, one of the few Belgian towns without a
historic centre, they turned against the plans of city
politicians to create such a centre artificially. And,
reversing this principle, their design for a high-rise
building in Tirana, Albania, is based on the premise
that the building will adapt to the local environment
during the construction phase. Here, the process of
building cities is alive and kicking.
