structures that are made of wood, occasionally resemble sculptures, and have room
for no more than one visitor at a time. As architecture within the architecture of the
museum itself, these projects are located somewhere between the opposing poles of
the public and private spheres.
Guillaume Bijl
1946 geboren in Antwerpen, Belgien lebt und arbeitet in Antwerpen und Münster.
Die Installationen von Guillaume Bijl sind geprägt von Ironie und Witz, setzen sie
doch eine Illusion von Gestaltung und Ordnung in die Welt, die uns das Unvermögen
bzw. die oft unfreiwillige Komik öffentlicher Inszenierungen bewusst macht.
Der Versuch, städtische Räume zu ordnen und so zu gestalten, dass sie unterschiedlichen
Wünschen und Anforderungen gerecht werden, ist in den Augen von
Bijl eine Illusion und Thema seiner Kunst. Sein künstlerisches Programm lässt
sich weder mit Begriffen wie „objet trouvé“ noch „Kontext-Kunst“ ausreichend
beschreiben. Bijl zweifelt grundsätzlich an, dass sich das Öffentliche durch die
Inszenierung von Öffentlichkeit beispielsweise durch Stadtmöblierung erfahren
lässt. Seine Installationen leben von der Täuschung durch die Realität. So sieht
beispielsweise Bijls ‚Römische Straße’ (1994) im Antwerpener Freilichtmuseum
Middelheim lediglich wie eine archäologische Stätte aus. Bijl glaubt, dass man die
Dinge in ihrer Inhaltslosigkeit und Leere nur mit Hilfe der Illusion ertragen kann.
Der Kulturtourismus und die Freizeit- und Konsumindustrie dienen dem Künstler
dabei als Modell.

Full of irony and wit, Guillaume Bijl’s installations create an illusion of design and
order, revealing the impotence or often unintended comedy of public events or
public appearances. The attempt to establish order in the urban setting and to shape
the city to satisfy various interests and requirements is, according to Bijl, an
illusion – and the chief focus of his art. Terms such as ‘objet trouvé’ and ‘context
art’ are insufficient to describe his artistic approach. Bijl has fundamental doubts
that the public sphere can be experienced by placing it on stage – for example, by
means of urban street furniture. His installations thrive from the deception provided
by reality itself. Bijl’s Roman Street (1994) in the Middelheim Open-Air Museum
in Antwerp, for example, resembles an archaeological site. The artist believes that
illusion is the only way to endure the meaninglessness and emptiness of things. In
this regard, cultural tourism and the world of consumerism serve Bijl as models.

Dieses Gespräch mit Andreas Siekmann und Clemens von
Wedemeyer, zwei Künstlern des „Vorspann“-Projekts, wird sich
ausführlich mit den realisierten Arbeiten der beiden befassen.
Schwerpunkte des Gesprächs werden zum einen das Verhältnis
von Stadtmarketing und Kunst sein, ein Thema mit dem
sich Andreas Siekmann eingehend beschäftigt, und zum anderen
die Frage nach der Relation von Film, Kino und Stadt, der
sich die Arbeit von Clemens von Wedemeyer widmet. Hildegund
Amanshauser’s discussion with Andreas Siekmann and Clemens
von Wedemeyer, two of the participants in the ‘Vorspann’ project,
will focus on the artists’ realised works. Particular emphasis
will be placed on the relationship between city marketing and
art – a topic explored extensively by Andreas Siekmann– and on
the links between film, cinema, and city, which play a key role in
Clemens von Wedemeyer’s oeuvre.
