Two Sides to a Story
It was a cold evening and my grandparents
and I had just finished a delicious supper.
Grandpa Joe was sitting in his ancient
rocking chair in front of the chimney, smoking
his pipe while I sat on the carpet, waiting for
him to begin with his story. “Hmm,” he said,
running his fingers through his fading grey
hair. “I think I’ll tell you how I met Granny
Ruth.”
“I had just moved to America, young and
very handsome, and had started my own
watchmaker’s business. I was proud to
continue the family tradition. Then on 16th
October a young lady, Granny Ruth, came
rushing in just when I wanted to close the
shop and said, “I’m sorry but I need to buy
my father a gift. It’s his birthday tomorrow.”
Since I was a real gentleman, I gladly helped
her in choosing a watch that would be a
suitable birthday present.
“Should I accompany you on your way home,
Miss?” I offered as she was about to leave.
“It’s pretty dark and there are quite a number
of gangs lurking in these streets.”
“No, thanks,” she replied. “I’m a big girl.
I know how to take care of myself.” She
walked out of the door, with the packet in
her hands. She had only walked a few steps
when a dark figure appeared in front of her.
The thief ripped the package out of her
hands and started to run away. As I saw this
I stormed out of my shop and ran after the
thief. I caught up with him quickly, for at that
time I was very athletic and…”
“Oh, how nice. You’re telling Johnny how we
met. It’s such a lovely story,” said Granny
Ruth as she entered the room and sat down
on the couch, the cat Bounty jumping on her
lap.
“It was 16th October,” she started. “I was a
beautiful young actress at that time and I
was very successful. My days were busy and
I had to buy father a birthday present at last
notice. I entered Joe’s little shop just before
it closed. I had to explain everything to him
and I almost had to fake some tears so that
he would help me. He was obviously very
nervous, because he hardly said anything
and if he did, he stuttered badly. After some
time I found a watch and left the shop. Then
suddenly a thief tried to grab hold of the
watch, but I swung my handbag around and
hit him on the head. He dropped the watch
and ran away instantly…”
