Juliet’s Liberation The bedroom still held her scent, a gentle waft of fresh spring roses that lingered now only as a sickening odour of despair. A grave silence seemed to smother the beauty of the portraits that now hung as drowsy souls on the cheerless walls. A crimson rug lay strewn across the ashen sheets like a lifeless body, its once passionate colour stifled by the deathly atmosphere. William drew in a sharp breath. As the heavy air squeezed into his aching lungs, he felt the strain of hot tears rise to betray his struggling composure. A dull pain throbbed in his chest, filtering into his every move like a tormenting curse. “Oh Rose, my dear Rose,” he muttered, as his heavy sigh gave way for thin streaks of salty tears to course down his unkempt visage. William slowly traipsed across the stuffy room. A lonely rocking chair sat by the cold, dusty fireplace. A few books by Jane Austin and a collection of Shakespeare’s Sonnets lined the mantlepiece, along with them a painting of Rose. Everywhere he looked, William saw traces of the woman whom he had loved so ardently without rule or reason. Images of her thick bronze curls, her honeyed lips, her bright amber eyes scorched his broken mind. Every waking memory tore at his languished heart, permeating his soul with oppressing agony. “Why, my sweet Love? Oh, why did you do it?” It had been one and a half weeks since Rosaline Shaw’s death. Mr Shaw had found her in their sleeping quarters on Good Friday just after he had returned from the evening service. A bottle of poison was recovered from her young lifeless hands and a doctor had thus concluded that she had taken her life. “Rash, silly thing!” Mr Shaw had cursed, storming out of the room with a flushed fury. Rosaline’s much older husband was not considered a very amiable man and was known to be a rather vain, condescending person. Thus, no one was very surprised when Mr Shaw seemed more upset about the terrible sin that his wife had committed and the stain she had now left on his dignity rather than her actual death. Little did he know of the severing pain that the shocking news had caused another young man the next morning when the paper had arrived. William’s heart winced at the memory of those terrible few lines. Every atom of his being had seemed to break down with the growing realization of the dreadful incident. His mouth had run dry and a churning sense of nausea had infiltrated his entire being. “It can’t be true,” he had whispered in straining disbelief, “Please, somebody tell me it’s not true.” A few days after the funeral Mr Shaw had been seen abandoning his home and leaving town, never to be seen again. The townsfolk speculated that he had been tormented by the endless gossip that clawed at his reputation and thus decided to escape the scars of shame. Although it partly pained William to see the remnants of his Love’s abode, he took charge of the country house on impulse for fear that trespassers might ransack it. Now William stood in the familiar but lifeless room of his inamorata, the woman whom he had adored above everything, confronted with the sickening canker of interminable heartache. His eyes searched the room, every corner of it reviving moments of wonderful romantic passion and endless vows of fervent love that only willed to torment him further. His weakened knees sank to the ground as he buried his tear-washed face in the soft duvet. Muffled, uncontrollable sobs floated into the lonely silence as he wept for his perished sweetheart. “Will?” a soft voice suddenly sounded behind him. William turned his bloated face, blinking into the draining sunlight as it filtered through a window by the door. A figure stood in the doorway, shrouded by a dark cloak that shone slightly in the waning light. “It is you! Oh, William! William, my Love!” William gasped as the hooded person threw back her cloak and fell into his arms. The sweet scent of her auburn hair, her soft skin… none of it made sense. “Rose? Is this a dream? I thought you had died! I saw it in the paper!” Rose giggled softly and smiled as she helped William off the floor. “My Love, remember how you used to read Romeo and Juliet to me?” William nodded slowly. “Well, if I were to say that I found Juliet’s potion and was able to feign my own death, would you still be my Romeo?” William laughed, tears streaking down his dsk 83 Middle & Senior School
