company or a person resident outside India has to pay due attention to the conditions, regulations <strong>and</strong> procedures which<br />
are laid down <strong>in</strong> different notifications by the Reserve Bank of India issued <strong>in</strong> terms of Section 6 of FEMA.<br />
2.4 Trends <strong>in</strong> FDI <strong>in</strong>flows <strong>in</strong>to India<br />
FDI <strong>in</strong>flows grew steadily through the first half of the 90s but stagnated between 1996-97 <strong>and</strong> 2003-04 (Table 2.1). The<br />
year-on-year fluctuations until 2003-04 make it difficult to identify a clear trend; however, <strong>in</strong>flows have been <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g<br />
cont<strong>in</strong>uously s<strong>in</strong>ce 2004-05. Dur<strong>in</strong>g 2008-09, India registered FDI <strong>in</strong>flows of $33.6 billion <strong>and</strong> total cumulative <strong>in</strong>flows<br />
from August 1991 to March 2009 have been to the tune of $155 billion.<br />
2.4.1 FDI outflows from India<br />
Indian companies are reach<strong>in</strong>g overseas dest<strong>in</strong>ations to tap new markets <strong>and</strong> acquire technologies. While some of the<br />
<strong>in</strong>vestment has gone <strong>in</strong>to greenfield projects, a major portion of Indian overseas <strong>in</strong>vestment went <strong>in</strong>to acquir<strong>in</strong>g<br />
companies abroad. Acquisitions br<strong>in</strong>g with them major benef<strong>its</strong> such as exist<strong>in</strong>g customers, a foothold <strong>in</strong> the dest<strong>in</strong>ation<br />
market <strong>and</strong> the niche technologies they require. Due to the rapid <strong>growth</strong> <strong>in</strong> Indian companies’ M&A activity, Indian<br />
companies are acquir<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ternational firms <strong>in</strong> an effort to acquire new markets <strong>and</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> their <strong>growth</strong> momentum,<br />
buy cutt<strong>in</strong>g-edge technology, develop new product mixes, improve operat<strong>in</strong>g marg<strong>in</strong>s <strong>and</strong> efficiencies, <strong>and</strong> take<br />
worldwide competition head-on. It has emerged as the most acquisitive nation <strong>in</strong> emerg<strong>in</strong>g nations, accord<strong>in</strong>g to global<br />
consultancy KPMG (2008) <strong>in</strong> their Emerg<strong>in</strong>g Markets International Acquisitions Tracker.<br />
