SECONDARY DATA-BASED ANALYSIS<br />
Based on the availability of data, we computed the E-G-L <strong>and</strong> E-G-O for 3-digit NIC sectors of production. The E-<br />
G-L has been computed for 93 sectors <strong>and</strong> the E-G-O for 92 sectors of production. Based on the E-G-L values, there<br />
are 41 highly agglomerated, 18 moderately agglomerated <strong>and</strong> 34 non-agglomerated, i.e., dispersed, sectors. The<br />
correspond<strong>in</strong>g numbers for E-G-O are 37, 22 <strong>and</strong> 33, respectively (Table 6.47).<br />
We depict the E-G-L of the top 25 (out of 93) sectors that provide the highest employment <strong>in</strong> FDI-enabled <strong>in</strong>dustrial<br />
sectors <strong>in</strong> Table 6.48. These sectors account for 87 per cent of the FDI-enabled employment <strong>in</strong> our database. Other<br />
important sectoral characteristics, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g those for FDI-enabled components, have also been reported.<br />
It can be observed that 10 out of the 25 top FDI employment sectors have relatively high agglomeration, 9 are relatively<br />
dispersed <strong>and</strong> 6 sectors are moderately agglomerated. Some of the highly agglomerated sectors with high employment <strong>in</strong><br />
FDI-enabled production un<strong>its</strong> <strong>in</strong>clude grow<strong>in</strong>g of crops (011), motor parts (343), general purpose mach<strong>in</strong>ery (291), medical<br />
appliances (331) <strong>and</strong> transport equipment (359), among others. Examples of dispersed sectors <strong>in</strong>clude chemical products<br />
(242), dairy products (152), tobacco products (160), basic iron <strong>and</strong> steel (271) <strong>and</strong> motor vehicles (341), among others.<br />
About 39 per cent of the total FDI employment is generated <strong>in</strong> the 10 highly agglomerated E-G-L sectors <strong>and</strong> 36 per<br />
cent <strong>in</strong> the dispersed sectors. FDI plants account for 22 per cent of all the plants (domestic <strong>and</strong> FDI) <strong>in</strong> the highly<br />
agglomerated E-G-L sectors, with the correspond<strong>in</strong>g value be<strong>in</strong>g 18 per cent <strong>in</strong> the dispersed sectors.<br />
The preferred state-level dest<strong>in</strong>ations of the top 25 (out of 93) FDI employment-provid<strong>in</strong>g sectors is shown <strong>in</strong> Table<br />
6.49. It may be observed that the highly agglomerated sectors have relatively high employment <strong>in</strong> their respective top<br />
preferred states, with the reverse hold<strong>in</strong>g true for the least agglomerated (dispersed) sectors.<br />
The E-G-O of the top 25 (out of 92) sectors that produce the highest output <strong>in</strong> FDI-enabled plants is reported <strong>in</strong> Table<br />
6.50. These sectors account for 91 per cent of the FDI-enabled output <strong>in</strong> our database. Other important sectoral<br />
characteristics, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g those for FDI-enabled components, have also been reported.<br />
It is observed that 6 out of the top 25 FDI output sectors have relatively high agglomeration, 11 are relatively dispersed,<br />
<strong>and</strong> 8 sectors are moderately agglomerated. Some of the highly agglomerated sectors with high output <strong>in</strong> FDI-enabled<br />
production un<strong>its</strong> <strong>in</strong>clude motor parts (343), general purpose mach<strong>in</strong>ery (291), transport equipment (359), <strong>and</strong> medical<br />
appliances (331), among others. Examples of dispersed sectors <strong>in</strong>clude chemical products (242), basic iron <strong>and</strong> steel<br />
(271), motor vehicles (341), dairy products (152) <strong>and</strong> basic chemicals (241), among others.<br />
About 17 per cent of the total FDI output is generated <strong>in</strong> the six highly agglomerated E-G-O sectors <strong>and</strong> 61 per cent<br />
<strong>in</strong> the dispersed sectors. FDI plants account for 19 per cent of all the plants (domestic <strong>and</strong> FDI) <strong>in</strong> highly agglomerated<br />
E-G-O sectors, with the correspond<strong>in</strong>g value be<strong>in</strong>g 13 per cent <strong>in</strong> dispersed sectors.<br />
The state-level distribution <strong>in</strong> five major states for the top 25 FDI output-generat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustrial sectors is depicted <strong>in</strong><br />
Table 6.51. It can be observed that the highly agglomerated sectors have a relatively high output <strong>in</strong> their respective top<br />
preferred states, with the reverse hold<strong>in</strong>g true for the least agglomerated (dispersed) sectors.<br />
6.5.2 Determ<strong>in</strong>ants of Locational Choice of FDI-enabled Plants<br />
As already mentioned, while agglomeration estimates have been based on state-level data, the determ<strong>in</strong>ants of<br />
locational choice have been analysed at the state level as well as the city level. Apart from this, one can also<br />
consider variations across geographical regions like north, east, west <strong>and</strong> south, as well as firm-level characteristics.<br />
