ISO 14001:
continuing the certifi cation process
In 2004, all Cigarette Division facilities – plants,
threshing centers and research centers – were involved
in the environmental certifi cation process. Measures
continued in France, Spain, Poland and Morocco, in line
with the established timetable aiming for comprehensive
certifi cation of all sites by 2005/2006. Three cigarette
plants earned certifi cation in 2004 – the Riom plant in
France, the Cádiz plant in Spain and the Radom plant
in Poland. The certifi cation audits emphasized the high
level of employee commitment and the maturity
of the environmental management system installed.
The two pilot plants in Cádiz and Riom have passed their
fi rst audit six and eight months respectively following
certifi cation.
Certifi cation audits in 2005 will concern facilities
in Nantes, Metz, Le Havre, Alicante, Logroño and
Palazuelo, as well as the research centers in Les Aubrais
and Tres Cantos. The Tobacco Institute in Bergerac,
Macotab in Corsica and Régie des Tabacs in Morocco
will draw up their respective certifi cation timetables
in the second half of 2005.
The Cigar Division is also seeking ISO 14001
certifi cation, in this case for its Cantabrian plant
in 2005, after which the process will be rolled out
to the facility in Strasbourg. On the Logistics side,
six distribution centers in Spain were certifi ed in 2004.
All of the processes will be audited by BVQI, which
has been selected to ensure certifi cation and regular
monitoring of action plans, and by AENOR for Logista’s
distribution centers. ISO 14001 certifi cation provides
the guarantee of a continuous improvement program,
as it involves an annual review and three-yearly audit.
In order to comply with the related legal requirements,
which are numerous and complex, Altadis has also
developed a computerized regulatory monitoring system
that has made all prevailing legislative and regulatory
requirements available to every Group site.
At end-2004, ISO 14001 was revised. The audit of
the Radom cigarette plant in Poland was therefore
conducted in accordance with the updated version
of the standard.
