<strong>the</strong> design <strong>and</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>tenance of <strong>the</strong> web-site, add<strong>in</strong>g an outreach section to <strong>the</strong> web-site<br />

(com<strong>in</strong>g soon), <strong>and</strong> help<strong>in</strong>g design <strong>and</strong> build museum exhibits for mar<strong>in</strong>e/science centers.<br />

In addition to <strong>the</strong> academic, research <strong>and</strong> technical staff, Abby Pagan-Allis <strong>and</strong> L<strong>in</strong>da<br />

Prescott are our Program Managers <strong>and</strong> keepers of order with <strong>the</strong> able assistance of<br />

Maureen Claussen.<br />

Facilities <strong>and</strong> Equipment:<br />

With <strong>the</strong> startup of <strong>the</strong> Center, <strong>the</strong> University provided a new 8000 square foot build<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Given <strong>the</strong> very rapid growth of <strong>the</strong> Center, space became <strong>the</strong> limit<strong>in</strong>g factor <strong>in</strong> our ability<br />

to take on new projects. In 2003 we exp<strong>and</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> second floor of <strong>the</strong> new build<strong>in</strong>g<br />

provid<strong>in</strong>g greatly needed additional office, graduate student <strong>and</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g space.<br />

Our com<strong>put</strong><strong>in</strong>g facilities cont<strong>in</strong>ue to grow <strong>and</strong> evolve <strong>in</strong> order to keep up with our<br />

exp<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g research needs. Center servers are currently <strong>in</strong> a state of migration with respect<br />

to roles <strong>and</strong> software upgrades. Earlier <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> year, all L<strong>in</strong>ux server operat<strong>in</strong>g systems<br />

were upgraded from Red Hat 9 to Red Hat Enterprise 4 for security <strong>and</strong> compatibility<br />

reasons, but after additional test<strong>in</strong>g, it was decided that <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al operat<strong>in</strong>g system would<br />

be CentOS L<strong>in</strong>ux, which is identical to Red Hat Enterprise L<strong>in</strong>ux, but freely distributed.<br />

All rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Microsoft W<strong>in</strong>dows 2000 servers have been upgraded to Microsoft<br />

W<strong>in</strong>dows Server 2003. Our rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g SGI/IRIX server has been decommissioned <strong>and</strong><br />

replaced with a CentOS server, runn<strong>in</strong>g on Dell/PC hardware, negat<strong>in</strong>g SGI excessive<br />

annual ma<strong>in</strong>tenance costs.<br />

With new students <strong>and</strong> staff arriv<strong>in</strong>g each semester, <strong>the</strong> Center cont<strong>in</strong>ues to grow at an<br />

accelerated rate. Given <strong>the</strong> large number of active research projects <strong>and</strong> academic<br />

courses, we have begun development of a Center Intranet website, consist<strong>in</strong>g of an onl<strong>in</strong>e<br />

knowledge base, researcher blogs, <strong>and</strong> consolidated wiki to encourage collaboration<br />

with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Center. In addition, <strong>the</strong> Intranet will also provide webmail, web calendar, web<br />

mapp<strong>in</strong>g, purchase authorization track<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> an asset management system for Center<br />

users. To compliment <strong>the</strong> Intranet, we have also upgraded our version control software<br />

from CVS to Subversion, mak<strong>in</strong>g it safer <strong>and</strong> less difficult for researchers <strong>and</strong> students to<br />

track changes dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> development of com<strong>put</strong>er applications. In addition, o<strong>the</strong>r core<br />

services have been upgraded recently, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g email, web services, <strong>and</strong> FTP.<br />

An <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> both <strong>the</strong> number of research projects <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> volume of data collected for<br />

each project has <strong>put</strong> a stra<strong>in</strong> on <strong>the</strong> Center’s storage resources, <strong>and</strong> as such, <strong>the</strong> Center has<br />

purchased a Network Appliance FAS960c iSCSI Storage Area Network (SAN). The new<br />

SAN provides an additional 24TB of raw storage capacity for <strong>the</strong> Center, br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

gr<strong>and</strong> total to approximately 36TB. In addition to <strong>the</strong> benefit of <strong>in</strong>creased storage<br />

capacity, <strong>the</strong> FAS960c provides higher through<strong>put</strong> than conventional disk drives,<br />

decreas<strong>in</strong>g process<strong>in</strong>g time for research projects. It also provides <strong>the</strong> Center with <strong>the</strong><br />

ability to centralize all research data <strong>in</strong> a s<strong>in</strong>gle location. The current plan is to migrate<br />

approximately 10TB of research data from our Legacy direct attached storage systems to<br />

<strong>the</strong> SAN. Currently, this process is about 50% complete. Recent projects have <strong>in</strong>creased<br />

<strong>the</strong> need for storage exponentially. To accommodate for <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>creased network utilization<br />
