papers on, <strong>and</strong> demos of this technology have been presented at both scientific <strong>and</strong> policy<br />
meet<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
This past year, several improvements have been made to <strong>the</strong> whale track<strong>in</strong>g software<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g:<br />
1) The addition of tools to convert EK60 data to GeoZui4D's exist<strong>in</strong>g<br />
curta<strong>in</strong> plot format. Two channels are comb<strong>in</strong>ed us<strong>in</strong>g different<br />
colors to show how <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tensity returns vary between channels.<br />
2) The addition of <strong>the</strong> ability to display on-screen depth, position <strong>and</strong><br />
altitude <strong>in</strong>formation. When a whale is displayed over bathymetry,<br />
an on-screen numeric display of its position, depth <strong>and</strong> height of<br />
<strong>the</strong> bottom can be shown. This answers <strong>the</strong> most common<br />
questions asked by scientists who are study<strong>in</strong>g whale behavior<br />
us<strong>in</strong>g GeoZui-4D.<br />
3) Incorporation of DTAG data <strong>in</strong>to GeoZui-4D <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> dynamic<br />
synchronization of <strong>the</strong> visualization with specific behavioral<br />
sequences.<br />
Ware has also developed <strong>and</strong> applied tools (Trackplot) for <strong>the</strong> analysis of whale behavior.<br />
New analyses of track<strong>in</strong>g data collected <strong>in</strong> 2005 reveals consistency <strong>in</strong> head<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong><br />
whales dur<strong>in</strong>g side-roles. It is hypo<strong>the</strong>sized that this has to do with <strong>the</strong> orientation of<br />
s<strong>and</strong>-waves on <strong>the</strong> bottom. These analyses have also resulted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> classification of a<br />
catalogue of hi<strong>the</strong>rto unknown humpback whale behaviors. Visualizations from <strong>the</strong><br />
Center have appeared <strong>in</strong> a variety of media <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>se visualizations are credited with<br />
gett<strong>in</strong>g cont<strong>in</strong>ued ship time on <strong>the</strong> NOAA Ship, NANCY FOSTER for an additional three<br />
years. Center visualizations have also been used <strong>in</strong> numerous hear<strong>in</strong>gs on <strong>the</strong> potential<br />
location of offshore natural gas term<strong>in</strong>als.<br />
Flow Visualization:<br />
The <strong>in</strong>corporation of flow visualization models <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> GeoZui4D environment has<br />
opened of a range of applications <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest from ocean <strong>and</strong> current modelers both<br />
<strong>in</strong>side <strong>and</strong> outside of NOAA. Our goal is to provide tools that allow both researchers <strong>and</strong><br />
members of <strong>the</strong> public to better underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> out<strong>put</strong> from flow models. This is<br />
important to NOAA because of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> number <strong>and</strong> quality of global, ocean,<br />
<strong>and</strong> estuar<strong>in</strong>e flow models. These models are becom<strong>in</strong>g critical to <strong>in</strong>terpret<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />
generaliz<strong>in</strong>g physical oceanographic data, underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g mar<strong>in</strong>e ecologies, underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
wea<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> climate prediction. The flow visualization work is be<strong>in</strong>g carried out by<br />
graduate student Qu<strong>in</strong>n, <strong>in</strong> collaboration with Ware; partial fund<strong>in</strong>g for this work has also<br />
been provided by NSF. Ware is also build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gs of a new flow visualization<br />
package to deal with sigma coord<strong>in</strong>ate models. He is work<strong>in</strong>g closely with NOAA (<strong>and</strong><br />
o<strong>the</strong>r) modelers <strong>and</strong> currently <strong>the</strong> new visualization package can load data from <strong>the</strong><br />
follow<strong>in</strong>g models:<br />
