identification of seafloor properties from acoustic data. Before com<strong>in</strong>g to New<br />

Hampshire he was <strong>the</strong> NSERC Chair of Ocean Mapp<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> University of New<br />

Brunswick where he led a team that developed a worldwide re<strong>put</strong>ation for <strong>in</strong>novative<br />

approaches to ocean mapp<strong>in</strong>g problems.<br />

Dave Monahan is <strong>the</strong> Program Director for <strong>the</strong> Nippon Foundation General Bathymetric<br />

Chart of <strong>the</strong> Oceans (GEBCO) tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g program <strong>in</strong> oceanic bathymetry. Prior to jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

CCOM, he served 33 years <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Canadian Hydrographic Service, work<strong>in</strong>g his way<br />

down from Research Scientist to Director. Dur<strong>in</strong>g that time, he established <strong>the</strong><br />

bathymetric mapp<strong>in</strong>g program <strong>and</strong> mapped most Canadian waters, built <strong>the</strong> Fifth Edition<br />

of GEBCO, led <strong>the</strong> development of LIDAR, developed <strong>and</strong> led <strong>the</strong> CHS Electronic Chart<br />

production program, <strong>and</strong> was Canadian representative on a number of International<br />

committees <strong>and</strong> boards.<br />

Christian de Moustier is <strong>the</strong> newest addition to <strong>the</strong> senior faculty of <strong>the</strong> Jo<strong>in</strong>t<br />

Hydrographic Center/Center for Coastal <strong>and</strong> Ocean Mapp<strong>in</strong>g. His Professor position is<br />

split between <strong>the</strong> Ocean Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> Electrical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Departments. He is a<br />

world-renowned expert <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>and</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g aspects of advanced sonar systems<br />

for ocean mapp<strong>in</strong>g. Christian comes to us from <strong>the</strong> Scripps Institution of Oceanography<br />

where he was responsible for <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stallation <strong>and</strong> operation of a number of multibeam <strong>and</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r sonar systems. His research <strong>in</strong>terests focus on development of <strong>in</strong>novative sonar<br />

process<strong>in</strong>g techniques <strong>and</strong> acoustic seafloor characterization.<br />

Yuri Rzhanov, with a Ph.D. <strong>in</strong> Physics <strong>and</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics, is an Associate Research<br />

Professor <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Center <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dept. of Ocean Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. He has a very wide range<br />

of com<strong>put</strong><strong>in</strong>g skills <strong>and</strong> has built a number of applications for higher education that are<br />

presently <strong>in</strong> use at universities around <strong>the</strong> world. Most importantly Dr. Rzhanov has been<br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g models for sonar-seabed <strong>in</strong>teraction for bathymetric <strong>and</strong> sidescan sonars<br />

(<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Kle<strong>in</strong> 2000/5000 systems) as well as software for automatic mosaick<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

video imagery <strong>and</strong> sidescan sonar data.<br />

Col<strong>in</strong> Ware is <strong>the</strong> Director of <strong>the</strong> Center’s Data Visualization Research Lab <strong>and</strong> a<br />

Professor <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ocean Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> Com<strong>put</strong>er Science Departments. Dr. Ware has a<br />

background <strong>in</strong> human/com<strong>put</strong>er <strong>in</strong>teraction (HCI) <strong>and</strong> has been <strong>in</strong>strumental <strong>in</strong><br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g a number of <strong>in</strong>novative approaches to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>teractive 3-D visualization of<br />

large data sets. As a member of <strong>the</strong> UNB Ocean Mapp<strong>in</strong>g Group, Dr. Ware was <strong>the</strong><br />

developer of many of <strong>the</strong> algorithms that were <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong>to CARIS HIPS, <strong>the</strong> most<br />

commonly used commercial hydrographic process<strong>in</strong>g package.<br />

Thomas Weber is an Assistant Research Professor <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Center <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> Ocean<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. He earned his PhD <strong>in</strong> Acoustics at Penn State University <strong>and</strong> has B.S. <strong>and</strong><br />

M.S. degrees <strong>in</strong> Ocean Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> University of Rhode Isl<strong>and</strong>.<br />

His areas of <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong>clude (<strong>in</strong> no particular order): bubbles <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ocean <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir affect<br />

on sound propagation <strong>and</strong> scatter<strong>in</strong>g; bubble mediated air-sea gas exchange; underwater<br />

optical tomography; <strong>the</strong> use of multibeam sonar for measurements of fish, bubbles, <strong>and</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r scatterers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> water column; benthic habitat mapp<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong>; ocean sensor design.<br />
