Rhode Isl<strong>and</strong>). Initial results were impressive enough to request that we now extract all<br />

<strong>the</strong> imagery from <strong>the</strong> tapes <strong>in</strong> DVCAM format <strong>and</strong> attempt to create a s<strong>in</strong>gle large mosaic<br />

for <strong>the</strong> “Monitor” site. Our mosaick<strong>in</strong>g work has also supported cooperative research<br />

with NMFS <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r habitat mapp<strong>in</strong>g efforts <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g those of Bob McConneughey -<br />

NOAA Pacific Fisheries. Their groups are now rout<strong>in</strong>ely creat<strong>in</strong>g mosaics from <strong>the</strong><br />

seafloor imagery us<strong>in</strong>g our video mosaick<strong>in</strong>g software. O<strong>the</strong>r habitat-related projects we<br />

have worked on <strong>in</strong>clude those with Steve Intelmann, habitat mapp<strong>in</strong>g specialist, NOAA,<br />

Olympic Coast Sanctuary, WA, <strong>and</strong> Scott Ferguson <strong>and</strong> <strong>John</strong> Rooney (NOAA Pacific<br />

Fisheries, Hawaii) where mosaics were created from laser l<strong>in</strong>e scan data collected dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir western Pacific cruise <strong>in</strong> October 2006.<br />

Research also cont<strong>in</strong>ues <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> stereo reconstruction for seafloor roughness estimation:<br />

establish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> dependencies between <strong>the</strong> scene characteristics <strong>and</strong> highest spatial<br />

frequency that can be resolved by <strong>the</strong> stereopsis technique (with graduate student Anton<br />

Mamaenko) <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestigation of optimal blend<strong>in</strong>g algorithms for mosaic creation –<br />

fea<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g, graph-cut, quilt<strong>in</strong>g, gradient doma<strong>in</strong> stitch<strong>in</strong>g (with graduate student Fan Gu).<br />

Fan Gu is also <strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>g quantitative approaches to estimat<strong>in</strong>g mosaic quality ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

by match<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> trend of <strong>in</strong>dividual frames to <strong>the</strong> trend of <strong>the</strong> correspond<strong>in</strong>g frames backprojected<br />

from <strong>the</strong> median mosaic or by extract<strong>in</strong>g a set of match<strong>in</strong>g features from<br />

overlapp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dividual frames <strong>and</strong> warp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> frames to force <strong>the</strong> collocation of <strong>the</strong><br />

features. The results of <strong>the</strong>se efforts will be reported <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ses of Gu <strong>and</strong> Mamaenko.<br />

DATA MANAGEMENT:<br />

With <strong>the</strong> arrival of Jim Case as our full-time data manager, we have begun a serious<br />

effort at organiz<strong>in</strong>g our data hold<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m accessible both to <strong>in</strong>ternal <strong>and</strong><br />

external users. S<strong>in</strong>ce his arrival Jim has evaluated <strong>the</strong> hardware <strong>and</strong> software data<br />

<strong>in</strong>frastructure at <strong>the</strong> Center. A data management scheme has been designed <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

support of this restructure, two new data servers have been purchased. In concert with<br />

<strong>the</strong> data management restructur<strong>in</strong>g, Case <strong>and</strong> Calder are work<strong>in</strong>g on a “Knowledge<br />

Repository” database concept that will attempt to capture “expert op<strong>in</strong>ion” form Center<br />

doma<strong>in</strong> experts on relevant <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong> any particular field.<br />

The primary focus of this effort has been develop<strong>in</strong>g code <strong>and</strong> procedures to support <strong>the</strong><br />

mass migration of data from various locally-attached storage servers to a new Storage<br />

Attached Network (SAN – see facilities discussion). The key features of <strong>the</strong> system are<br />

automatic discovery <strong>and</strong> catalog<strong>in</strong>g of data files by project, <strong>the</strong> harvest<strong>in</strong>g of metadata<br />

whenever possible from well-known data files <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> storage of all of <strong>the</strong> above <strong>in</strong> a data<br />

management schema with<strong>in</strong> Oracle. All new code written for this project is ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> C,<br />

C++ or C#. C# is be<strong>in</strong>g used as <strong>the</strong> wrapper for all legacy code <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> language for all<br />

new code related to data management, metadata or Oracle I/O.<br />

A pilot project focused on <strong>the</strong> Portsmouth harbor region was <strong>in</strong>itiated <strong>in</strong> July. A major<br />

component of <strong>the</strong> project was <strong>the</strong> development of a Center portal by which all data would<br />

be discovered by <strong>the</strong> users. The technology chosen was Oracle Portal because it is tightly<br />

<strong>in</strong>tegrated with <strong>the</strong> data <strong>and</strong> metadata catalogs <strong>and</strong> has embedded Web Mapp<strong>in</strong>g<br />
