The visualization package can display sal<strong>in</strong>ity or temperature profiles <strong>and</strong> supports an<br />

excit<strong>in</strong>g array of particle trac<strong>in</strong>g methods. It also allows for 2D or 3D view<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

There are two o<strong>the</strong>r sub-projects with<strong>in</strong> our flow visualization <strong>in</strong>itiative:<br />

Museum exhibits: Follow<strong>in</strong>g on our successful development of a kiosk-based <strong>in</strong>teractive<br />

3-D museum exhibit for Seacoast Science Center (GeoExplorer) which allows an<br />

<strong>in</strong>teractive tour through an immersive 3-D environment up <strong>and</strong> under <strong>the</strong> Piscataqua<br />

River, stopp<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g sights along <strong>the</strong> way, Ware gas developed a prototype<br />

touch-screen display that that <strong>in</strong>corporates flow model for <strong>the</strong> Pisquataqua River, Great<br />

Bay <strong>and</strong> Little Bay Estuary has been built. The display shows <strong>the</strong> flow of water <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Estuary as a function of tides <strong>and</strong> currents. Wherever <strong>the</strong> screen is touched a bright dye<br />

is <strong>in</strong>jected <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> system <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> observer can see <strong>the</strong> fate of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>jected particles over<br />

several current <strong>and</strong> tidal cycles. Additionally, Ware cont<strong>in</strong>ues to work with Kate Raisz of<br />

Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Lights on <strong>the</strong> Smithsonian Science-on-a-sphere visualization of global flow<br />

patterns (for <strong>the</strong> new Smithsonian Oceans Hall).<br />

NOAA Nowcoast: Col<strong>in</strong> Ware <strong>and</strong> NOAA employee <strong>John</strong> Kelley have <strong>in</strong>itiated a new<br />

project to create <strong>in</strong>novative <strong>and</strong> more effective ways of present<strong>in</strong>g NOAA flow model<br />

out<strong>put</strong> (from <strong>the</strong> HYCOM system of models) to <strong>the</strong> general public. Pete Mitchell’s<br />

master’s <strong>the</strong>sis is <strong>the</strong> major research component. Briana Sullivan will be help<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

evaluation <strong>and</strong> technology transfer. An evaluation study is currently underway.<br />

Mid-water fish: One of <strong>the</strong> most excit<strong>in</strong>g advances of this year has been our adaptation<br />

of a new generation of multibeam sonars to allow <strong>the</strong> real-time visualization of targets <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> water column. While aspects of this fall under our visualization <strong>the</strong>me, we will<br />

discuss this activity <strong>in</strong> detail under “New Projects”.<br />

SEAFLOOR CHARACTERIZATION:<br />

We have a number of <strong>in</strong>ter-connected research programs underway aimed at explor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> ability of our mapp<strong>in</strong>g systems to provide quantitative <strong>in</strong>formation on <strong>the</strong> make-up<br />

<strong>and</strong> character of <strong>the</strong> seafloor as well as its depth. These programs deal with a range of<br />

sensors (s<strong>in</strong>gle beam, multibeam <strong>and</strong> sidescan sonars, lidar, video, etc.) <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>volve<br />

<strong>the</strong>oretical studies, <strong>the</strong> collection of remotely sensed data, <strong>and</strong> “ground-truth” samples.<br />

They are particularly relevant for <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly important topic of essential fisheries<br />

habitat characterization.<br />

SINGLE BEAM SONAR AND MAPPING AND CHARACTERIZATION:<br />

In general support of our seafloor characterization efforts, Semme Dijkstra has cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

<strong>the</strong> development of several software tools. The TracEd tool provides a robust means of<br />

track<strong>in</strong>g, edit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> pars<strong>in</strong>g returns from s<strong>in</strong>gle beam echosounders. This tool, which<br />
