� Kle<strong>in</strong> 5410 Measured <strong>the</strong> transmitted signal with <strong>the</strong> USRD E27<br />

receiv<strong>in</strong>g for CW <strong>and</strong> FM pulses of 132 <strong>and</strong> 176 μs.<br />

Measured receive beam patterns (across- <strong>and</strong> along-track)<br />

of <strong>the</strong> bathymetric <strong>and</strong> sidescan channels with <strong>the</strong> USRD<br />

E27 transmitt<strong>in</strong>g CW pulses of 132 <strong>and</strong> 176 μs.<br />

Bathymetry from <strong>the</strong> Kle<strong>in</strong> 5410:<br />

The Center has been <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> exhaustive test<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> transducers on <strong>the</strong> 5410 so as to<br />

better underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> feasibility of us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 5410 sidescan to simultaneously collect<br />

hydrographic quality bathymetry. Based on <strong>the</strong> data collected at <strong>the</strong> Center, Kle<strong>in</strong> agreed<br />

to replace <strong>the</strong> port transducer under <strong>the</strong> system warranty. The plan was to conduct<br />

Kle<strong>in</strong>’s normal (qualitative) at sea test<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> system followed by qualitative test<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

be conducted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Center acoustic test facility. Although <strong>the</strong> performance of <strong>the</strong> new<br />

5410 port transducer for side scan imagery was exceptionally good, <strong>the</strong> new 5410 port<br />

transducer did not function for bathymetry. The problem with <strong>the</strong> bathy performance was<br />

determ<strong>in</strong>ed to be a wir<strong>in</strong>g error dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> manufactur<strong>in</strong>g. Consequently <strong>the</strong> tank tests<br />

were not conducted on that transducer. Kle<strong>in</strong> manufactured ano<strong>the</strong>r port transducer for<br />

<strong>the</strong> port side of <strong>the</strong> 5410. Due to ship schedul<strong>in</strong>g both locally on <strong>the</strong> Gulf Challenger <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> Alaska on <strong>the</strong> NOAA Ship Fairwea<strong>the</strong>r, qualitative tank test<strong>in</strong>g was conducted <strong>in</strong><br />

advance of qualitative test<strong>in</strong>g at sea. The tank tests confirmed that <strong>the</strong> latest port<br />

transducer provided by Kle<strong>in</strong> for <strong>the</strong> 5410 was wired correctly. The horizontal beam<br />

pattern of <strong>the</strong> port transducer was quite close to that for <strong>the</strong> starboard transducer; however<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vertical axis <strong>the</strong>re was a noticeable difference where<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> new port transducer has<br />

a vertical asymmetry that is not present <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> starboard transducer. The tank tests were<br />

conducted by Jim Glynn with assistance from Glenn McGillicuddy <strong>and</strong> Barbara Kraft.<br />

Despite <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g problem with <strong>the</strong> port transducer, study of 5410 phase-based<br />

bathymetric measurements proceeded. The study <strong>in</strong>cluded develop<strong>in</strong>g process<strong>in</strong>g<br />

software specifically to h<strong>and</strong>l<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> phase data from <strong>the</strong> 5410. The f<strong>in</strong>al field work that<br />

was conducted this report<strong>in</strong>g period <strong>in</strong>cluded a m<strong>in</strong>i-survey <strong>in</strong> New York Harbor on a<br />

launch from <strong>the</strong> NOAA Ship Thomas Jefferson. Evaluation of <strong>the</strong> bathymetric function<br />

of <strong>the</strong> 5410 reached its projected plateau dur<strong>in</strong>g this report<strong>in</strong>g period. This research is<br />

described <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> MS <strong>the</strong>sis of James Glynn. CCOM cont<strong>in</strong>ues to work with Kle<strong>in</strong><br />

Associates <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir attempt to provide a fully operational port transducer for <strong>the</strong> 5410.<br />

A related project is be<strong>in</strong>g carried out by graduate student Rebecca Conrad <strong>and</strong> Lloyd<br />

Huff us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Boe<strong>in</strong>g Australia Stabiliz<strong>in</strong>g Tail (BAST) – an active tailf<strong>in</strong> designed by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Australian Navy for <strong>the</strong> Kle<strong>in</strong> 5000 series sonars <strong>and</strong> sent to <strong>the</strong> Center for fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

test<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> improvement. The BAST was <strong>put</strong> through a sequence of tests which <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />

measurements conducted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> laboratory, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> tow tank, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field work<strong>in</strong>g from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Gulf Challenger. The BAST must be cont<strong>in</strong>uously ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed by a source of<br />

pressurized dry air to prevent <strong>in</strong>trusion of water via porous areas <strong>in</strong> its alum<strong>in</strong>um cast<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

That has caused operational problems <strong>and</strong> consequently it has been decided not to <strong>in</strong>stall<br />

a s<strong>in</strong>gle board com<strong>put</strong>er <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> BAST for automatically stabiliz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> “flight patterns”.<br />
