Encompassing 301 acres, Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area presents 18th-century Williamsburg in the
years surrounding the American Revolution. Throughout the city, an engaging mix of sights, sounds
and activities invites guests to immerse themselves in the 18th century and be part of the story of America.
From mid-March through late November, the engaging and interactive street theater of Revolutionary
City ® provides a unique opportunity for guests to experience the events that shaped America. Each
day’s events reveal another theme in the transition from subjects to citizens and encourage participants
to make connections between those Revolutionary changes and the issues facing citizens today.
Experience the near-riot that occurred in front of R. Charlton’s Coffeehouse in protest of the Stamp
Act and discover why “The King’s Government Collapses”. Learn of colonial outrage that turned
loyal subjects against their king, sparked revolutionary ideas that divided loyalties — even within
families — and compelled Williamsburg residents to choose between monarchy and self-government.
With independence declared, but far from achieved, “The Challenge of Independence” uncovers
the new concerns faced by residents of war-torn Williamsburg. Slaves considered the uncertain
promise of freedom if they would flee their patriot masters and join the British. Citizens strive
to survive the ravages of war and a British occupation of their city, and then finally celebrate
General Washington’s advance on nearby Yorktown. And what happens when the shooting stops?
“Nation Builders” explores the lives of America’s founders — not just the well known, such as George
Washington,Thomas Jefferson and Patrick Henry, but also the lesser-known citizens and individuals who
quietly built a new nation as they went about their daily lives.
Throughout the day, guests can engage with costumed interpreters, skilled tradespeople, actors in
dramatic events and “people of the past,” who inhabit the exhibition sites and historic trade shops
throughout the Historic Area. Homes, public buildings and shops are furnished with objects from
Colonial Williamsburg’s extensive collection of English and American antiques and reproductions
made by Colonial Williamsburg tradespeople. In the evenings, guests can participate in dance,
music, drama and other 18th-century entertainments or learn something of the ghosts that inhabit
some of the historic buildings.
