Highlights I In the 18th century, Williamsburg’s taverns provided comfortable lodgings for travelers
and places to gather for meals, conversation and entertainment. Proprietors prided themselves on
serving filling meals using fresh ingredients. Today, Colonial Williamsburg’s historic dining taverns
carry on these traditions by providing a relaxed and comfortable setting for diners to experience
some of the flavor of the 18th century.
Christiana Campbell’s Tavern I George Washington was a faithful customer of this establishment.
Today, the tavern serves dishes inspired by those the founding father would have enjoyed during
his travels throughout the colonies.
Chowning’s Tavern I Josiah Chowning opened his tavern in 1766. Today’s diners partake of freshly
prepared lunch fare featuring stew and sandwiches. In the evenings, enjoy dinner fare or stop in
after 9 p.m. for Gambols, featuring entertainments and light fare.
King’s Arms Tavern I Opened in 1772, this was one of the town’s most genteel establishments.
Present-day diners savor traditional southern fare, sumptuous desserts and after-dinner cordials in
surroundings an 18th-century traveler would recognize.
Shields Tavern I In the early 1740s, James Shields assumed ownership of the tavern that his fatherin-law
had operated. Tavern guests today dine on southern comfort foods inspired by “colonial
receipts.” Shields may be reserved by groups for private functions.
Payment I Cash, check, money order or credit card
