4. People <strong>and</strong> Education for <strong>Human</strong> <strong>Rights</strong><br />

Recapitulation<br />

In earlier Lectures I showed how the <strong>United</strong> <strong>Kingdom</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> her erstwhile colonies, as a result <strong>of</strong> the interaction<br />

<strong>of</strong> human thinking <strong>and</strong> historical events, contributed to<br />

the development <strong>of</strong> concepts <strong>and</strong> theories <strong>of</strong> human<br />

rights <strong>and</strong> to institutional practices protecting human<br />

legal rights. Those thoughts <strong>and</strong> practices in turn<br />

assisted in the development <strong>of</strong> a universal international<br />

legal ethic <strong>of</strong> human rights, irrespective <strong>of</strong> whether the<br />

concept <strong>of</strong> human rights could be philosophically or<br />

anthropologically underpinned. This international legal<br />

ethic with its agreed st<strong>and</strong>ards has been feeding back to<br />

the <strong>United</strong> <strong>Kingdom</strong>, reinforcing internal conceptions<br />

<strong>and</strong> practices regarding human rights, reminding us <strong>of</strong><br />

our traditions. In explaining this I demonstrated the<br />

psychological effects <strong>of</strong> engaging in rights-talk <strong>and</strong><br />

linkages between legal rights, moral or human rights <strong>and</strong><br />
