� Atatürk University was established in 1957 and started education in 1958 with
150 students, 10 members of teaching staff in two Faculties namely, College of
Agriculture and Faculty of Letters and Science.
� Atatürk University is the 5th. University of Turkey. Now there are 130
Universities in Turkey. 36 of these Universities are private “foundation”
Universities.
� Several activities were organized to commemorate the 50 th . Anniversary of the
foundation of Atatürk University Throughout the year 2008.
� At its 50th. Year the University is considered to be one of the most important
institution of higher education in Turkey with 35000 students, 2500 members of
teaching staff in 13 Faculties, 14 Vocational Colleges, 6 Graduate Schools, 16
Research Centers, and 2 Research Hospitals.
� The Faculties at the University in order of the date of establishment is as follows:
1. College of Agriculture
2. Faculty of Letters and Science
3. Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences
4. Faculty of Medicine
5. Faculty of Dentistry
6. Faculty of Education
7. Faculty of Engineering
8. Faculty of Theology
9. Faculty of Fine Arts
10. Faculty of Communication and Journalism
11. Faculty of Pharmacy
12. Faculty of Veterinary Sciences
13. Low School
� Atatürk University has the largest experiment farm in Turkey with an area of
more than 30000 decars.
� The University has 1100 housing units on Campus which is the highest number
of such units among the Universities in Turkey.
� More than 1500 members of the teaching staff of Atatürk University have left
the University to work in other Universities. That is why Atatürk University is
called as the “the University establishing Universities”.
� The contribution of the University to the economy of the City of Erzurum is
more than 50 million Dollars per year.
