Living Medical Dreams
IN MARCH 2007, TOLL DRIVER MALCOLM JONES DIED IN AN
HORRIFIC COLLISION NOT FAR FROM TARCUTTA IN NSW. HE
LEFT BEHIND HIS WIFE ANNETTE AND THEIR FOUR CHILDREN,
DANIEL, JOSHUA, LUKE AND NAOMI. MALCOLM WAS JUSTIFIABLY
PROUD OF HIS FAMILY, IN THEIR YOUNG LIVES HIS AND
ANNETTE’S CHILDREN HAVE ACHIEVED AN ADMIRABLE LIST
OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS. SECOND SON, JOSHUA’S MOST RECENT
ACHIEVEMENT WOULD HAVE GIVEN HIM YET ANOTHER REASON
TO SMILE.
Joshua who is in his third year of medicine at Monash University has
been selected as one of 34 Australian medical students to represent
Australia at the 29th Asian Medical Students’ Conference which will
be held in Tokyo, Japan in July this year. He will join 500 other medical
students from Thailand, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong
Kong, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, the Philippines, China, Bangladesh,
Pakistan, India, Austria and Singapore to consider this year’s theme
which is ‘Non-communicable Disease and Health Promotion’.
Application to attend was open to all Australian Medical Students and
selection was based on a written application and resume. The
delegation was selected by a panel consisting of three physicians and
academics. The conference relies on the delegates arranging
sponsorship to fund their journey and the cost of attendance, and Toll
Group Managing Director Paul Little was happy to offer Joshua Toll’s
support. Without this corporate sponsorship candidates’ like Joshua
would not be able to attend and the Australian representation at the
conference would be significantly reduced.
At the conference each country will present a paper highlighting the
pertinent issues relevant to an issue of concern within their own
World's Greatest Shave
ON FRIDAY 14 MARCH 2008 ONE OF OUR MUCH LIKED
STAFF MEMBERS, SASKIA BLACKSTOCK OR JUST SAS TO
ALL WHO KNOW HER, FROM TOLL’S WOOLWORTHS CONTRACT
AT MINCHINBURY, GENEROUSLY VOLUNTEERED TO HAVE HER
BEAUTIFUL LOCKS SHAVED OFF TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE
LEUKAEMIA FOUNDATION.
Sas, who is 55 years young said "age should be no barrier!" What
a gutsy gal!
This is an annual event that Sas joyfully never misses out on and this
year celebrated her 5th year in fund raising for the Leukaemia
Foundation, collecting this time an amazing $1860 from family, friends,
management and staff. Even our faithful subbies generously parted
with cash.
Sas had fellow staff member Jodi Wood do the deed giving Sas a No.1
shave all over but not without the help of site managers Robert Scott
and Allan Bray also adding in their handy work. Sas finished off with a
coloured hair spray restoring a girly look once again.
Well done to Sas... we are all proud
of her at Minchinbury.
community. The paper that Joshua and his Australian counterparts
will focus on will cover the current public health issues of Diabetes
and Cardiovascular disease.
Joshua explained that they will also be preparing a number of posters,
to be displayed in several locations around Tokyo, including their City
Hall and the Central Library. All delegates will partake in keynote
lectures, workshops and community service activities that help enrich
their learning as medical students.
Joshua’s long term goal is to practice in neurosurgery but in the short
term he hopes to work in third world countries. The experience and
opportunity of meeting with future doctors from so many other
countries will be a potential gateway to some of these goals through
networking.
"I have told people I want to be a doctor for as long as I can remember,
and I believe it would have been about grade 5 that I became more
strongly aware and vocal about it. I speak fluent Japanese as I lived in
Japan for one year on exchange at a high school in Tokyo, and have
studied the language since primary school. I achieved a perfect score
in Year 12 Japanese in 2005.
"I am extremely glad that Toll have decided to take an interest and
support what I feel will be a very valuable opportunity which will have
many benefits for years to come."
We can look forward to hearing from Joshua again on his return later
in the year. There is little doubt that he will make both Toll and his
parents proud.
