PDL Toll Working Hard in Honiara
PDL TOLL HAS BEEN THE PRIME CONTRACTOR FOR THE
PROVISION OF LOGISTICS SUPPORT TO THE REGIONAL
ASSISTANCE MISSION IN THE SOLOMON ISLANDS (RAMSI)
SINCE OCTOBER 2003. PDL TOLL’S BASE IN THE SOLOMON
ISLANDS IS IN THE COUNTRY’S CAPITAL, HONIARA.
RAMSI is the combined military and civilian police force charged with
restoring the rule of law in the Solomon Islands under Operation
HELPEM FREN.
The RAMSI coalition was established at the request of the Solomon
Islands Government and is made up of military and police forces from
the Australian Government and the governments of New Zealand,
Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Tonga.
PDL Toll has been increasingly busy in Honiara in recent times, with its
client, the Australian Federal Police (AFP), embarking on several new
works programs as they further develop their main site in Honiara at
Guadalcanal Beach Resort (GBR).
As prime contractor for the provision of logistics support, PDL Toll
provide all the day to day services the AFP require including catering,
maintenance, works, transport, stores, physical training, laundry,
cleaning, medical, air, sea, freight and executive services to the AFP.
Currently one of the busiest departments of the PDL Toll team is the
Facilities and Works Department.
Led by Manager Ross Craig, and supported by a very enthusiastic and
competent crew including Duncan Stewart (Deputy Works Manager),
David Sandeman (Maintenance Supervisor), Warren Davis (Grounds
Supervisor) and 12 locally employed Solomon Island technical staff, this
team not only provides facilities, works and maintenance support to the
GBR facility, but also to the 15 island outposts. PDL Toll services these
outposts by helicopter, fixed wing aircraft or boat. The islands are remote
and can take up to two hours to reach by air or one day by ship.
Major works to be managed by this Department this year include:
Removal and replacement of a full commercial kitchen capable
of catering for up to 1500 people.
Additional accommodation blocks for up to 144 Australian Defence
Force personnel.
A new PDL Toll office accommodation block is also under construction.
Likely other works to be managed this year include:
Erection of a new warehouse.
Power generation upgrade.
GBR accommodation redevelopment.

Aside from the new works, the maintenance of existing structures is a
huge undertaking. Dave Sandeman and his crew work tirelessly
maintaining a myriad of buildings on GBR, including structural repairs,
electrical work, servicing and maintenance to over three hundred air
conditioners, water, sewerage and drainage systems. In the relative
remoteness of the Solomon Islands, all of these tasks take on further
challenges.
The maintenance of the outposts is particularly challenging. PDL Toll is
tasked with providing the same maintenance support to these outlying
islands as is provided to GBR and Honiara. Power to most outposts is
provided by PDL Toll-maintained generators, and PDL Toll provides all
the coordination of the movement of material and personnel to the
outposts by air and sea.
Warren Davis and his team of local Solomon Island staff are also
continually active keeping the GBR grounds mown and tidy, coconut
trees lopped and the laundry and cleaning services going.
Apart from all the hard work, the PDL Toll team still manages to have
a bit of fun and regularly struts their stuff on the GBR netball courts,
to great acclaim.
PDL Toll has been the prime contractor to RAMSI since 2003.
