It may be helpful to compare statistical inference used in hypothesis testing<br />

to the judicial inference process involved in criminal trials. The presumption<br />

that the defendant is innocent until proven guilty is equivalent to the null<br />

hypothesis. Requiring “evidence beyond a reasonable doubt” to convict a<br />

defendant is aimed at minimizing the chances of convicting innocent defendants.<br />
