‚Little Etosha
of the South‘
comes to
Windhoek
Pardon me, but what on earth is this? A rhino?
Here, in southern Namibia, at the Fish River
Canyon? - It’s not a joke, it’s no mirage. Gondwana
Cañon Park east of the canyon boasts
four black rhino since April. And that’s not all:
with a little luck springbok, gemsbok and ostrich,
zebra, red hartebeest and blue wildebeest,
mountain zebra, kudu and klipspringer
can be seen on both sides of the road...
The private park east of the canyon has developed
into the ‚Little Etosha of the South‘ over
the years. Several game species which used to
be indigenous to the area but were hunted to
extinction 100 to 200 years ago were reintroduced
to the park under Gondwana’s game
programme. The aim is to restore the original
variety of fauna and flora as far as possible.
Visitors to the park also have the opportunity
to explore and experience the unique nature
of the area from closest quarters – with,
among others, mule trekking tours and hikes
in the northern reaches of the canyon, or scenic
drives, horseback excursions and shorter hiking
trips in the central part of the park.
Visitors to the Namibia Tourism Expo can learn
more about Gondwana Cañon Park and the
Fish River Canyon at the stand of the Gondwana
Collection. Geology, climate, fauna and flo-
ra as well as the area’s history are portrayed on
18 display boards. Later they will become exhibits
at the Canyon Information Centre which
is planned for Cañon Roadhouse to provide
guests of Gondwana Cañon Park with information
on the numerous wonders, big and small,
of nature in this area.
Brochures illustrating Gondwana’s four other
sites - Kalahari Anib Lodge northeast of Mariental,
Klein-Aus Vista near the Wild Horses of the
Namib, Namib Desert Lodge north of Sesriem/
Sossusvlei and Etosha Safari Lodge & Camp 30
km south of Okaukuejo – will also be available
at the expo stand, of course.
Comprehensive information on the Gondwana
Card will be available as well. Card holders are
granted a 50 percent discount on the accommodation
rate of any of Gondwana’s accommodation
establishments. About 2,000 cards
have been issued since the card was introduced
two years ago. The share of Namibian guests
has increased from about 1 percent to almost 5
percent. As before, Gondwana’s stand will be in
the President’s Hall on the balcony level.
