SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES<br />

Present: Chief Justice Roberts, Justice Stevens, Justice Scalia, Justice<br />

Kennedy, Justice Souter, Justice Thomas, Justice Ginsburg, Justice<br />

Breyer, and Justice Alito.<br />

The Chief Justice said:<br />

“Today’s orders <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Court</strong> have been duly entered and certified,<br />

and filed with <strong>the</strong> Clerk, and <strong>the</strong>y will not be o<strong>the</strong>rwise announced.”<br />

The Chief Justice said:<br />

“The <strong>Court</strong> now recognizes <strong>the</strong> Solicitor General <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>United</strong><br />

<strong>States</strong>.”<br />

Solicitor General Clement said:<br />

“Mr. Chief Justice, and may it please <strong>the</strong> <strong>Court</strong>. I have <strong>the</strong> honor to<br />

present to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Court</strong> <strong>the</strong> eighty-first Attorney General <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>United</strong><br />

<strong>States</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Honorable Michael B. Mukasey <strong>of</strong> New York.”<br />

The Chief Justice said:<br />

“General Mukasey, on behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Court</strong> I welcome you as <strong>the</strong> chief<br />

law <strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong> government and as an <strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>of</strong> this<br />

<strong>Court</strong>. We welcome you to <strong>the</strong> performance <strong>of</strong> your very important<br />

duties that will rest upon you by virtue <strong>of</strong> your <strong>of</strong>fice. Your commission<br />

as Attorney General <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong> will be placed in <strong>the</strong> records<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Court</strong>, and we wish you well in your new <strong>of</strong>fice.”<br />

Attorney General Mukasey said:<br />

“Thank you, Mr. Chief Justice.”<br />
