CURRICULUM GUIDEBOOK<br />

support individual learning needs in each of the six <strong>Essential</strong> <strong>Skills</strong> and are the generic<br />

<strong>Essential</strong> <strong>Skills</strong> Maps for all thirteen trades included in the Trade <strong>Essential</strong>s project.<br />

The following describes the structure and components of the curriculum frameworks<br />

developed for apprentices at the Trade <strong>Essential</strong>s Centre.<br />

Learning Category<br />

A Learning Category (as defined by Trade <strong>Essential</strong>s) is a general curriculum outcome<br />

and is one of the six <strong>Essential</strong> <strong>Skills</strong> identified for development in the Trade <strong>Essential</strong>s<br />

project: Reading Text, Document Use, Numeracy, Oral Communication, Computer Use<br />

and Writing. It appears in the top band across each of the six frameworks as shown in<br />

the example below.<br />

Note: Reading Text will be referred to as Technical Reading in all frameworks<br />

Learning Category<br />

A Learning Outcome is a specific curriculum outcome and describes what a learner<br />

should know or be able to do as the result of a course of study. Trade <strong>Essential</strong>s has<br />

identified one Learning Outcome for each Learning Category. The learning outcome<br />

statement appears below the Learning Category. For example, the learning outcome in<br />

the Trade <strong>Essential</strong>s Technical Reading Framework is:<br />

Learners will locate, recall, understand and interpret information in written text<br />

Learning Objective<br />

Learning objectives are the standards or benchmarks that identify what learners will<br />

know or will be able to do as the result of the completion of a number of related<br />

competencies in a particular “band”. In the example below, the objective for the band is:<br />

TR1 – Use Terminology of the Trade (Burgundy Box).<br />
