Upon completion of this course, apprentices will better understand how<br />
communication skills impact safety, productivity, job satisfaction, and job<br />
progression. Effective communication skills will benefit apprentices as they reach<br />
journey person status and as they accept additional responsibility for supervising<br />
and mentoring new employees.<br />
For specific information and examples of the use of oral communication for each<br />
trade, instructors should refer to the <strong>Essential</strong> <strong>Skills</strong> Profile and the National<br />
Occupational Analysis. It should be noted that, according to HRSDC’s <strong>Essential</strong><br />
<strong>Skills</strong> profiles, oral communication is one of the most important <strong>Essential</strong> <strong>Skills</strong> for<br />
cooks, plumbers and automotive service technicians as these tradespeople interact<br />
frequently with customers.<br />
Note: It is intended that the oral communication curriculum be embedded in other<br />
<strong>Essential</strong> <strong>Skills</strong> curriculum where possible. Many of the competencies in oral<br />
communication and the five other essential skills may be mastered concurrently.<br />
