Assessment objectives<br />

AO1 Knowledge with understanding<br />
Candidates will be expected to demonstrate knowledge and understanding in relation to:<br />
1. principles, concepts and theories<br />
2. biological relationships and the models used to explain them<br />
3. the vocabulary, terminology, conventions and definitions used<br />
4. laboratory apparatus and methods and their use<br />
5. the development of Biology through the scientific method in which theories are based on<br />
observation, experimental results, and deductions<br />
6. the cultural and historical influences on developments in Biology<br />
7. scientific and technological applications<br />
8. the social, ethical, economic and environmental implications of the study and application of<br />
Biology.<br />
The curriculum content of the syllabus defines the factual knowledge that candidates may be<br />
required to recall and explain.<br />
AO2 Analysis and application<br />
Candidates will be expected to:<br />
1. select, organise, interpret and analyse information in familiar and unfamiliar contexts<br />
2. identify, describe and explain patterns, trends and relationships<br />
3. make comparisons that may include the identification of similarities and differences and<br />
advantages and disadvantages<br />
4. make inferences and conclusions and construct arguments<br />
5. assess the validity of information and conclusions<br />
6. use skills, knowledge and understanding from different areas of study to solve problems in<br />
familiar and unfamiliar situations<br />
7. communicate information clearly, logically and concisely using appropriate specialist<br />
vocabulary.<br />
This assessment objective relates to information which may not be listed in the curriculum content of<br />
the syllabus. Information includes visual, textual and numerical stimulus material.<br />
In answering questions, candidates will be expected to use principles and concepts from within the<br />
syllabus and apply them in a logical, reasoned or deductive manner to a new situation.<br />
AO3 Experimental and investigative skills<br />
Candidates will be expected to:<br />
1. construct hypotheses and use them to make predictions<br />
2. plan investigations which may include testing a hypothesis<br />
3. know how to use apparatus and techniques skilfully, safely and effectively<br />
4. make and record observations methodically and with due regard for precision, accuracy and<br />
repeatability<br />
5. manipulate, present and analyse raw data<br />
6. evaluate data, methods and techniques, identify limitations and suggest improvements.
