Candidates should be able to:<br />
a) outline the structure of the human male and female urinogenital systems<br />
b) explain the roles of ovarian and anterior pituitary hormones in controlling the menstrual cycle (limited to<br />
oestrogen, progesterone, FSH and LH)<br />
c) explain what is meant by in vitro and in vivo fertilisation<br />
d) explain the roles of the placenta in pregnancy to include the transfer of materials, isolation of fetus from<br />
maternal blood and production of hormones (including chorionic gonadotrophin, oestrogen and<br />
progesterone and human placental lactogen)<br />
e) explain what cloning is and discuss ethical issues relating to the use of cloning in animals and humans<br />
(including production of cattle and therapeutic cloning)<br />
Practical learning outcomes<br />
Candidates should be able to:<br />
i) explain the relationship between structure and function of mammalian testis, ovary (including follicles<br />
and corpus luteum) and placenta using histological sections and electronmicrographs<br />
