2011. CANADIAN HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION
EDMONTON REGION
ANNUAL REPORT
1. P RESIDENT’ S R EPORT
As the saying goes, “May you live in
interesting times”. 2011 has proven a most
interesting year by any standard. A seismic
shift in the global economic centre of power
is underway and at the centre of all this is
a large country with a small population,
emerging as the strongest economy on the
planet. Yes, we are blessed to be living in a
country that has weathered the past three
years better than most. Has it been difficult?
Of course! Are we out of the woods?
Certainly the results of the past year suggest
we have a ways to go.
At the October 2011 CHBA National Meeting
in Ottawa, there was consensus that the
coming 2-3 years will be essentially a
‘steady-as-she-goes’ marketplace. Given
the turbulence of the recession that we are
emerging from and the singular economic
strength that the Edmonton Region has
demonstrated on the national stage, this is
a good-news story. The CHBA-ER has also
witnessed a dramatic change in fortunes over
the past year as the planning and programs
put in place by the previous Board of
Directors begins to take hold and bear fruit.
2011 has been a year of growth in virtually all
areas: we have witnessed unprecedented
membership growth; this April, we launched
our first and unquestionably successful
Residential Construction Industry Conference;
our magazine, The Industry Insider, came
off the press for the first time in September
2010, and we published seven extremely well
received issues over the course of the year;
we introduced Business Luncheons for the
management and executive sector of our
industry; our NextGen program for the young
(and young-at-heart) leaders of tomorrow
was refloated with outstanding turnouts for
all of their events; and our volunteer program
has continued to grow by leaps and bounds.
Our existing programs also enjoyed strong
support. The 2010 Awards of Excellence
in Housing Gala was very well attended
and members and judges enjoyed the
convenience of online submissions and
voting. All of the CHBA-ER’s social programs
were fully subscribed, and our Builder
Breakfasts – a cornerstone of our program
year – ran a full schedule. Dinner meetings
continued to enjoy strong support from the
membership.
On the committee side, our Government
Relations program has evolved into a multifaceted
creature that is truly moving CHBA-
ER into the centre of the residential decisionmaking
arena. We have gone from being a
3
4
reactive body operating outside the political
and administrative spectrum to a respected
and trusted collaborator in guiding our
Region’s diverse and challenging residential
needs in partnership with our municipalities
and the Capital Region Board. We have
enjoyed a number of salient wins on the
political stage that have, and will continue
to result in significant positive outcomes for
you, our members.
Naturally, all the foregoing cannot exist
without a strong financial backdrop.
Without wishing to steal the thunder of
our Treasurer’s Report, which follows, I will
go so far as to say that we have enjoyed
enormous revenue growth in the past year
from all functions of the Association. That
notwithstanding, CHBA-ER ran another
significant deficit for 2011. This has, not
surprisingly, generated considerable attention
and concern on part of the Board of Directors
and our Executive Officer. Steps have been
taken to ensure that we emerge from 2012 in
a surplus position. The Board recognizes that
the Association was treading new ground
in 2011 and, for all intents and purposes, we
were starting from scratch. There have been
missteps and some growing pains. I am,
however, confident that the CHBA-ER is on
track to make a full recovery.
In closing, I would like to thank my Board,
who have given generously of their time and
spirit, offering sage and timely advice over
the course of the past year. It has been an
enjoyable experience working with so many
dedicated professionals, all committed to
one common goal - the well-being of our
Association. Additionally, I would like to
thank the staff of the CHBA-ER who have
worked tirelessly to effect success on so
many fronts and to ‘keep their fingers in
the dyke’ when necessary. Lastly, and most
importantly, I would like to thank the legion
of volunteers who have selflessly stepped
forward to give of themselves in bringing to
life our ambitious plans. Volunteers are the
lifeblood of any non-profit organization and
I believe I can say, without prejudice, that the
CHBA-ER enjoys the best of the best.
I wish the Board of 2012 the best of luck and
I look forward to assuming my new role as
2. T REASURER’ S R EPORT
With CHBA-ER’s fiscal year now
closed (as of August 31, 2011), it is
time to step back and take stock of
where the Association stands as it
prepares to embark on Fiscal Year
2012. Much like last year, there is both
good news and bad. Without wishing
to sugar-coat our financial position,
the CHBA-ER has once more suffered
a significant deficit for the 2011 year,
versus the small surplus we had
originally budgeted for. That deficit
totals $319K. There are a variety of
reasons for this explained in more
detail below:
1. The Association undertook a
number of new initiatives in 2011
that we had been planning for in
2010. These included the Residential
Construction Industry Conference
(RCIC 2011), our new magazine,
The Industry Insider, our Business
Luncheon program, a restructuring
of the Awards of Excellence
delivery mechanism, our November
Volunteer Recognition evening, and
the revitalization of our NextGen
Committee. Additionally, we launched
a vigorous and extensive Government
Relations program that has already
yielded significant benefits to the
industry.
In the spring, when we were setting
our budget for the upcoming (2011)
year, we estimated these new events
would bring some much needed
revenue to the Association. While
most have been successful, a number
of these new initiatives did not
achieve our revenue expectations.
RCIC was profitable, but not as
profitable as we expected, performing
some $50K below expectations, due
in large part to a smaller registration
than we had forecast and lower actual
sponsorship. The Industry Insider
was profitable, however, advertising
revenue was slower to gain traction
than we had forecast – it came in
30K less than budget; our Business
Luncheon program actually lost a
small amount rather than generating
the $30K we expected, due, in
large part, to some non-applicable
topics as compared to the Builder
Breakfasts, and lower attendance
overall.
2. Our two public shows, the Edmonton
Home and Interior Design Show (EHIDS)
and the Edmonton Renovation Show,
both performed significantly below
expectations. Part of this was our failure
to put in place the budgeted sponsorship
revenue and part was due to two separate
but equally detrimental circumstances;
EHIDS was held on a weekend that proved
to be exceptionally warm and turnout was
correspondingly weak. (Coincidently, the
Renovation Show was held on Super Bowl
weekend, with the same lower attendance
levels.) In addition to this was an economy
that was, and continues to be, halting in its
recovery. This had the effect of reducing
the number of participant exhibitors at both
events, a major part of their revenue stream.
The result was two shows that had not seen
revenue that low in nearly a decade; EHIDS
generated $148K, versus its normal $200K+;
the Reno Show produced a profit for us of
$157K ,versus a more normal $195K+.
The other major item is that the Association
has largely exhausted its capital reserve.
The Board, however, has spent significant
time during the 2012 budgeting process,
strategizing ways to turn this deficit
situation around. We have trimmed both
our revenue expectations to a more modest
number and our costs by a steeper margin
to ensure financial security.
We are hoping the steps that are now
underway will enable us to continue to see
healthy increases in our revenue as we more
effectively tap the industry in response
to dramatically enhanced programs and
services. There is perhaps no better
barometer of this than the dramatic increase
in membership over the past year, from 387
to 433, an increase of 18%.
For more details on our financial picture,
I encourage you to see our Reviewed
Financials attached to the end of this
Annual Report.
In closing, I would like to thank the
membership and the Board for allowing me
to serve the Association and entrusting me
with the Treasurer position. My thanks to
the CHBA-ER staff who work hard on the
Association’s behalf, each and every day.
3. EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT
Our President, Jim Sirup, and our
Treasurer, Rose Naqvi-Parasynchuk,
have each detailed the ups and
downs of the past year related to
programs, services, and finances. As
your Executive Officer, I would like to
place those various accomplishments
in the context of our plan; in other
words, provide you with a report
card on how the CHBA-ER has done
with respect to its business plan and
stated priorities.
In order to bring you back up to
speed, let’s have a quick ‘Strategic
Planning 101’ refresher:
The CHBA-ER is a trade association
for the home building industry in
the Capital Region, that provides
professional development services
as well as government and public
representation. Over the past
several years, the Association has
experienced significant upheaval and
uncertainty as a result of the harsh
economic times, staff leadership,
and demographic shifts within
the industry, to the point that its
programs, services, and profile have
all suffered. In reaction to this, the
Board has implemented a dramatic
shift in function, moving to a Policy
Governance model of leadership
and restructuring my position as
Executive Officer, to assume the
operational reins of the Association.
Based on a detailed look at the
situation that our Association was in,
we crafted a dramatically different
strategic plan and supporting
business plan in 2010. Our Mission
Statement remains unchanged from
last year: To shape the future of the
home building industry in the Capital
Region.
Based on this, the Board agreed that
there were three primary roles for
the organization and these would
translate into its strategic goals:
A. Provide superlative programs and
services to the industry:
B. Effectively represent the interests
of the industry to government; and
C. Enhance the public image of the
industry.
In 2009, the Board defined a number
of objectives that would affect the
achievement of the Association’s mission
and goals. These were endorsed again in
2010. They included returning the reins of
control to the members through increased
committee engagement with the staff
supporting those committees. A desire
was expressed for better communication
with the membership, as well as for more
technical information to be shared. The
concept of a conference for the industry,
hosted by the CHBA-ER, was supported and
the role of the Association as the voice of
the industry to government and the public
was reiterated. To this end, the CHBA-ER
was restructured into a more business-like
model, complete with specific operational
and administrative functions.
The operational functions were broken down
into three components:
1. Programs & Services – (Programs being
those industry programs offered to the
membership and Services being the nontechnical);
2. Conferences & Shows – developing an
industry conference as well as more
engagement in the delivery of the Home
& Reno Show; and
3. Government Relations - effecting
more proactive engagement with local
governments on issues relevant to the
industry.
The administrative side was broken down
into four functions:
1. Communications - incorporating all
the communications mediums of the
Association, plus Media and Public
Relations;
2. Finance & Office Management
3. Member Relations – building the
relationship with our members into
a more comprehensive partnership,
benefiting both; and
4. Volunteer Management - creating a
comprehensive, effective, and methodical
system for organizing, recruiting, and
recognizing our many outstanding
volunteers.
In order to stay in line with the three
strategic goals identified above, specific
objectives were assigned to each:
A. Provide superlative programs and
services to the industry:
1. Provide education programs;
2. Provide technical presentations;
9
10
3. Provide an industry conference
which allow members to learn, share
information, and network;
4. Provide topic-specific programs to
support the industry;
5. Provide a forum for the industry to
discuss self-regulation;
6. Provide communication mediums
that inform and educate
the industry;
7. Provide networking opportunities for
the industry;
8. Contribute to the industry’s
marketability; and
9. Provide opportunities for members
to become engaged in the
development and delivery of their
programs and services.
B. Effectively represent the interests of the
industry to government;
1. Develop proactive relationships
with government that position
the Association as a partner in all
policy decisions affecting the
industry;
2. Develop information networks
that keep the Association
continuously apprised of all issues
before they become issues;
3. Engage members of significant
stature within the industry who are
able to influence the
decision-making process; and
4. Maintain strong ties with the media
in order to enable the industry to
provide timely and effective input
on matters of public interest.
C. Enhance the public image of the
industry:
1. Develop a Communications Plan
that brings continuity to the
Association’s promotion needs;
2. Assume a greater role in the
Home and Interior Design Show and
the Renovation Show in order to
provide a higher profile to the
Association;
3. Promote the Edmonton Region
Homebuilder Charity Funds; and
4. As part of the Communications
Plan, develop programs to further
the PR objectives of the Association.
Recognizing that the Strategic Plan outlined
above is designed to be implemented over
three years, a set of priorities for 2011 were
established. Those 16 priorities follow along
with the progress that has been made
towards each:
1. Set in place an effective governance
board by year-end: The Board of
Directors now:
a. Set the strategic plan annually;
b. Review and approves the business
plan and budget prepared by the
Executive Officer;
c. Review monthly financials and
progress on the business plan; and
d. Review and approve the board slate
for the coming year, as prepared by
the Nominating Committee, chaired
by the Past President, thereby
ensuring continuity.
2. Ensure a fully engaged GR Committee
and strategy by year-end; the GR
Committee, under the chairmanship of
the Vice President and supported by the
Government Relations Manager:
a. Has a business plan guiding its
activities;
b. Regularly meets with and delivers
presentations to all of the major
jurisdictions in the Capital Region,
especially the City of Edmonton and
the other five major municipalities;
c. Is in regular contact with the Capital
Region Board;
d. Contributes a member to the
provincial GR Committee; and
e. Engages in significant consultations
and partnerships throughout the
Capital Region to the benefit of the
industry.
3. Deliver a strong industry conference in
Apr 2011; RCIC 2011:
a. Attracted 604 delegates;
b. Hosted 70 tradeshow exhibitors;
c. Delivered 93 presentations in 8
concurrent sessions;
d. Hosted an Icebreaker and a Windup
reception; and
e. Generated a profit in excess of
$100,000.
4. Show more effective engagement in the
Home and Interior Design Show and the
Renovation Show: This continues to be a
work in progress. For each event we:
a. Mounted a major CHBA-ER exhibit;
b. Provided 5,000 logoed bags; and
c. Identified member exhibitors with
a CHBA-ER panel to display at their
exhibits.
5. Meet or exceed forecasted profit:
a. Generated a $319K loss versus a
$50K surplus as a result of lower-
than-budgeted revenue and
sponsorship for RCIC as well as
the two Shows, in addition to lower-
than-budgeted turnout for our
11
12
breakfast, luncheons and dinner
meetings;
b. Despite this deficit, the Association
did generate $1M more in revenue in
2011 than in it did in 2010.
6. Have not less than 450 members by year-end:
Despite recruiting 85 new members in 2011, the
Association ended the year with an increase in
membership from 387 to 433, 17 below our targeted
number.
7. Engage in full operation of all planned technical
committees and delivery of stated outcomes: Our
technical committees, or ‘industry committees’ as
they are now called, have by and large been very
active over the past year:
a. Addressing industry issues;
b. Delivering presentations;
c. Generating articles for the Industry
Insider magazine; and
d. Supporting the RCIC 2011 program.
8. Continue development of the Volunteer
Management Program to full operation of all
committees by year-end: The CHBA-ER:
a. Now enjoys the committed support
of just over 300 volunteers, up from
250 in 2010;
b. Hosted a well-attended Volunteer
Recognition Evening in November;
c. Continues development of a
comprehensive volunteer database,
in support of committees’ and the
Association’s HR needs.
9. Launch a CHBA-ER magazine: The Industry Insider
published its first issue in September 2010 and has
since:
a. Published 7 issues for the program
year, ending Aug 31, 2011;
b. Published each issue at a profit;
c. Regularly published 36-page +
issues full of relevant
industry content.
10. Become more effectively engaged in the
continuing education of the industry: The
Professional Development Committee is just getting
underway and will be establishing itself in 2012.
11. Introduce the Business Luncheon Program: The
Business Luncheon Program kicked off in September
and delivered 9 luncheons over the course of the
program year. While the program operated at a
small profit, attendance was less than planned for.
The program is currently being restructured to offer
more relevant topics to the industry.
12. Deliver a comprehensive and effective industry
awards program: The 2011 Awards of Excellence
hosted nearly 1200 guests and generated a profit
of over $90K, one of the Association`s largest
revenue generators. The Awards received over 155
submissions using the new online submission and
judging program. Refinements will continue into
2012.
13. Develop and implement an effective Public
Relations Plan: This program is being rolled into a
revised Marketing Committee that will get underway
in 2012. That notwithstanding, the 2011 Marketing
Committee launched an effective `Look For The
Logo` campaign that was carried out in local media
and at both the Home and Interior Design Show and
the Renovation Show;
14. Develop and implement an effective Media
Relations Plan: This program is also being rolled
into the revised Marketing Committee that will get
underway in 2012.
15. Perform regular surveys: The Association has
been using the website to gain some member
input on specific topics. We will be conducting a
membership-wide survey in 2012, similar to the one
done in 2010;
16. Experience no more than 10% staff attrition (1
person): Joy Van Marck, our Member Relations
Manager and Karen Morris, our Executive Assistant,
left the Association this summer. Shelly Portmann
completed her maternity contract with us, and
Kimberley Banford rejoined the staff as Programs
and Services Manager. Ronelo Aromin came on
board as our new Member Relations Manager.
It has been a busy year and the CHBA-ER continues to
grow and improve. 2012 will be devoted to getting our
fiscal house in order, while at the same time polishing
those programs and services that you, the membership,
support.
I would like to thank the Board of Directors for their
continued support of my efforts, my staff for their
commitment and dedication to both the Association
and the ambitious plan we have embarked upon, and,
especially, our volunteers, without whom none of this
4. OPERATIONS:
Operations include those activities
that provide direct technical,
professional development, social, and
networking programs and services to
the membership; they represent our
‘front line’ functions.
Operations can be divided into three
(3) categories:
• Programs and Services;
• Conventions (Shows) &
Conferences; and
• Government Relations
1.1 Programs & Services
With the exception of the Residential
Construction Industry Conference
(RCIC), Programs represents
the technical and professional
development activities of the
Association, while Services cover
our social and professional awards
activities.
1.1.1 Programs
4.1.1.1. Technical Advisory Committee
(TAC):
The Technical Advisory Committee
(TAC) is made up of builders,
renovators and general members
committed to addressing technical
issues that impact Edmonton’s
residential construction industry. The
committee deals with everything
from servicing requirements and
lot grading issues, to Fire Code
regulations and Building Codes. No
technical issue is too big or too small
to be addressed at the TAC level. This
is why, in an effort to keep things
more manageable and effective,
TAC has been supplemented with
a number of smaller, specifically
focused technical committees. CHBA-
ER’s active technical committees
include: Renovation, Single/Multi-
Family, Environmental, Safety,
Economics, and Sales.
Each technical committee Chair is a
member of TAC. This main committee
serves as the central information
hub for all technical information
flowing through the CHBA-ER.
Issues brought up at the various
technical committees are shared
with TAC on a monthly basis. TAC is
responsible for establishing working
groups to address those issues and
communicating information back to
the rest of the membership.

1.1.1.0.1 Renovation Committee
The first goal of the Renovation Committee
was to identify a mandate so that it could
function in a productive and meaningful
manner. It was quickly decided that the
primary function of the committee would
be to facilitate a regular meeting with a
set agenda once a month for all Renomark
companies, and to ensure that:
• All committee members are promoting
the benefits of CHBA membership and
exhibiting the level of professionalism that
goes along with it;
• Committee members participate in
opportunities such as Reno Month and the
annual Renovation Show;
• All committee members have an
opportunity to share their knowledge with
other industry experts and to enhance the
delivery of their construction practices and
products; and
• All committee members are informed of
issues other CHBAs across the province
and around the country are currently
dealing with.
In order to evenly distribute the workload,
the following four sub committees were
created: Renovation Show Committee,
Reno Education Committee, New Members
Committee, and a Government Relations
Committee. Chairs from each of these
subcommittees met on an as-need basis and
reported to the Renovation Committee.
There was a significant increase in member
participation which resulted in numerous
achievements not previously experienced
by past committee members. Most notable
were the educational presentations at
monthly meetings, written submissions for
the Industry Insider magazine, a unified
promotion of our professional practices at
both the Renovation Show and RCIC, and
15
16
finally, a newly established relationship
between Reno Members, City of Edmonton
Planners and Inspectors, and our CHBA
Government Relationship team.
Overall, RCIC 2011 generated quite a buzz!
Looking down the concourse between
25
26
the session rooms at presentation breaks
and watching the enormous amount of
discussion taking place, there was no doubt
that we had created a signature happening.
As is true of all CHBA-ER events, none of
this would have been possible without the
incredible dedication and vision of our
volunteer committees. There were four RCIC
committees in all, including, the RCIC Chair
Committee, the Exhibitor Sub-Committee,
the Sessions Sub-Committee, and the
Marketing Sub-Committee.
1.1.2 Home and Interior Design Show
The Home and Interior Design Show was
held October 1st – 3 rd, 2010 at the Edmonton
Expo Centre. The show was moved to the
venue’s newest halls E, F and G.
The Home Show brought in just over 6,400
attendees over 3 days, approximately
1,000 fewer than 2009. Net profit for the
show was down approximately $20,000
compared to 2009.
1.1.3 Renovation Show
The Edmonton Renovation Show is a major
intersection between the buying public
and the fast-paced residential construction
industry. It is positioned as the first show of
the year to capitalize on the public’s early
season interest.
The 2011 Renovation Show saw 211
exhibitors, compared to 231 the year before.
This included 11 RenoMark members.
The show brought in approximately 3,100
attendees over three days, down from
6,256 the year before. Net profit was down
approximately $20,000 from 2010.
4.3 Government Relations
CHBA-ER’s Government Relations (GR)
program focuses on building and enhancing
two-way communication with a number of
Capital Region municipalities, the Capital
Region Board, the Urban Development
Institute (UDI), and a variety of other
building industry stakeholders. Through a
systemic process of building relationships
with municipal leaders and key decision
makers through formal and informal
activities, a number of important successes
were achieved.
CHBA-ER’s GR program aims to create
an industry-friendly policy and regulatory
landscape based on principles of open
and honest communication, excellence,
innovation, collaboration and stewardship.
Its mission is to effectively represent
industry to government by encouraging
and ensuring local decision makers that
economic and regulatory actions enhance
the choice, affordability, and quality of
housing in the Capital Region.
The premise this year was to put in place
measureable objectives, supported by a
related series of strategies, each aligned
with the following six primary goals.
Influencing the regulatory and political
environment in such a way that provides
industry with the franchise to operate;
Building stakeholder awareness,
understanding, and appreciation of the
importance and value of the 2.6B$ home
building industry in the Capital Region;
Developing strategic alliances with
other organizations that may be similarly
impacted by government’s policy, legislative,
and financial (budgetary) decisions;
27
28
Staying abreast of government activities
that could affect the industry adversely;
Building relationships and developing a
reputation with local decision-makers as a
responsible corporate citizen; and
Leveraging the relationships we have built
so as to ensure access to political and
bureaucratic decision-makers, and to give
the CHBA-ER an opportunity to address
priorities impacting industry objectives early
in the policy development process.
2011 - A Year of Success
The efforts of the CHBA-ER Government
Relations Committee resulted in a number of
positive results this year. They included:
• Presentations, submissions and meetings
with the cities of Edmonton, Fort
Saskatchewan, Leduc, Spruce Grove,
and St. Albert, the counties of Leduc,
Strathcona, and Parkland, as well as
In an industry such as ours, it is very
important to build, maintain, and
enhance cordial and productive working
relationships with local decision makers.
Those relationships must be based on trust
and credibility. For the CHBA-ER, this has
meant working with municipalities and local
stakeholders to ensure that our industry and
our consumers are not adversely affected by
new regulations and/or bylaws or changes
to existing ones. We must continue to
position ourselves as a key resource for
information, solutions, and support when it
comes to our area of expertise, experience,
and passion – homebuilding.
5. ADMINISTRATION
The Administration function provides
the financial and logistic resources
necessary for Operations to function.
As such, it is comprised of four
principle elements:
• Communications;
• Finance & Office;
• Member Relations; and
• Volunteer Management
5.1 Communications
5.1.1 Industry Insider Magazine
The Industry Insider is published
every 6 weeks by the CHBA-ER.
The magazine provides timely and
relevant industry news on all issues
impacting Edmonton’s residential
construction industry. Members are
kept up-to-date on committee issues,
upcoming events, political initiatives,
economic updates, and more.
Member-supplied editorial content
is intended to inform, inspire and
motivate members to get involved
and keep up to speed on Association
priorities and industry issues.
Feedback around the magazine
remains encouraging. Key municipal
leaders, industry stakeholders, and
members, have all indicated that
they are reading the magazine and
finding its content both valuable and
informative.
8 issues of the Industry Insider
were published in 2011. Each month,
beginning in March, the magazine
included an exclusive one-on-one
interview highlighting a local figure
or concept important to the industry.
Topics included:
March: Kathleen LeClair, C.O.,
Capital Region Board
April: Minister Thomas
Lukaszuk: An Update on
Alberta’s Multi-Point
OH&S Plan
June: Hector Goudreau,
The Industry Insider is a direct line of
communication to local leaders and industry
colleagues; whether through advertising
or providing editorial, members are
encouraged to get involved. As CHBA-ER
members, the Industry Insider is your voice
– use it!
5.1.2 Website
Providing members and the public with a
current, interactive and user-friendly website
is one of the CHBA-ERs top priorities.
Enhancing the new CHBA-ER website
remains a work in progress. Improvements
have been made, including an improved
economic updates section, a monthly survey
component on the homepage, and revisions
to the automated online registration and
payment system.
Although a lot of work has been done, the
new website is far from complete. Work
continues on the members’ side of the
website. Individual committee pages will be
up and running in the New Year.
5.1 Edmonton Region Home Builders
Charity Funds (ERHC)
The Edmonton Region Homebuilders
Charity Funds
Committee,
ERHC, did
not bring
forward any major projects in 2011. That
notwithstanding, $10,000 was donated to
the ERHC from proceeds of the CHBA-ER
Annual Golf Tournament and the Association
once more donated six Trade Scholarships
to the NAIT Student Awards Program at the
September 2010 Dinner Meeting.
The ERHC was established in 2008 as a
visible means for the industry to establish
a philanthropic presence in the Capital
Region. The original goal was to fund two
initiatives: a community capital project
in support of non-market housing and an
endowment project to fund bursaries for
student pursuing careers in the trades.
Driven by the efforts of Larry Anderson
of Lincolnberg Homes and Burke Perry of
Perrybuilt Homes Inc., ERHC was able to
contribute significantly to the construction
of Homebase, a 26-unit apartment
building for special needs residents, which
opened in January of 2010, and raise over
$300,000 for an endowment managed by
the Edmonton Community Foundation to
fund six NAIT Trade Scholarships annually
for students entering their final year of
apprenticeship training.
The Board of Directors has approved the
revitalization of the ERHC Committee for
2012 and volunteers with a philanthropic
interest are encouraged to participate.
5.2 Smoke Detector Program
The Smoke Detector Program is a joint
partnership between Edmonton Fire
Rescue Services, Edmonton Fire Fighter’s
Union, and the Canadian Home Builders’
Association – Edmonton Region. On the
weekend of October 23 rd, 2011, Edmonton
Fire Rescue visited 645 homes, installed 236
smoke detectors, and changed out 121 dead
batteries. An official program launch was
held on Thursday, October 20th, which was
well attended by local media.
Smoke detectors were provided to residents
free of charge, thanks to the generous support
of these generous sponsors:
• Fire ‘n Ice Mechanical & Controls
• Interstate All Battery Center
• Millenium Mechanical Services LTD.
• York
• Milwaukee
5.3 Member Relations
5.4.1 Membership
Increasing and maintaining CHBA-ER
membership is an ongoing initiative. Since
last year’s Annual Report was issued, the
Association has welcomed 34 new members.
New members realize the value of
networking and communication and are
excited to take advantage of the many
resources the CHBA-ER has to offer.
Members share a common passion for the
industry’s future and want to be a part of its
success.
5.4.2 Sponsorship
CHBA-ER is a trade association; as such we
are unique among non-profits in that our
membership is comprised exclusively of
companies, not individual members. As an
association whose members are companies,
we regard membership as the first step in a
partnership continuum that actively involves
each company in the CHBA-ER. That
involvement can take many forms: volunteer
support, financial support, leadership, or
program sponsorship. At the end of the
day, the Association is only as strong as the
engagement of its members and, of course,
sponsorship is a critical element in this
formula.
Sponsorship represents a symbiotic
relationship. At one time it was enough
for us to simply seek support for the sole
purpose of furthering the CHBA-ER’s Goals
and Objectives. In the current economy, such
a limited perspective is non-sustainable; our
supporters reasonably expect that there
will be mutual benefit to their partnering
with us through sponsorship, and that
their sponsorship will be quantifiable in
terms of a return on investment. They are
looking for imagination and engagement;
signage and complimentary tickets are no
longer an end in itself, but rather should
be a part of a larger, more comprehensive
program – one that enables sponsors to
interact directly with their target markets. It
is the commitment and responsibility of the
CHBA-ER to ensure that this happens and
we look forward to our members, partners
and sponsors holding us accountable to this
benchmark as we move forward.
It is through sponsorship that most of our
events take place. Whether it is a keynote
speaker, a sporting event, the Awards
of Excellence or our newest initiative,
the Residential Construction Industry
Conference (RCIC), all activities and
functions are made possible through the
generous support of our members. It is
because of our sponsors that all members
have the opportunity to participate in and
receive the benefits of an initiative, program
or event.
With your input we can work together to
create, grow and manage sponsorship as
a mutually rewarding and advantageous
experience for both the sponsor and the
CHBA-ER.
Thank you for your past support and we
look forward to your continued involvement.
5.5 Volunteer Management
5.5.1 Volunteer Management Committee
2011 was another amazing year for the
Volunteer Management Committee!
The Canadian Home Builders Association
– Edmonton Region (CHBA-ER) now has
over 250 volunteers and a strong, active 23
committees.
The Volunteer Management Committee has
been very busy over the last twelve months:
• Planning the 2011 Volunteer Recognition
Evening;
• Recruiting Volunteers;
• Organizing volunteer orientations;
• Monitoring committees to ensure they are
functioning to the best of their ability;
• Monitoring volunteers to ensure that
they are content with their volunteer
experience; and
33
34
• Developing volunteer roles; Chair, Cho-
5.5.2 NextGen Committee
The NextGen Committee kicked off in
February 2010 with an informal meet and
greet dinner at a local restaurant. This gave
the more than 50 committee members an
opportunity to get to know each other and
to discuss where they would like to see the
group go. By April, NextGen had doubled
in size – just in time for the committee’s
first ever educational luncheon where past
CHBA-ER presidents Peter Jackson, John
Hrynkow, and Burk Perry discussed their
individual roads to success, (complete with
bumps along the way), and offered tips to
the next generation of industry leaders on
how to move forward successfully in the
homebuilding industry.
In June, the NextGen group came together
for a fun social night at Gateway Lanes
and then in September, the committee
hosted the CHBA-ER’s first ever Family Fun
BBQ. Over 180 members and their families
attended the event, which boasted a large
bbq Buffet, face painters, a caricature artist,
a balloon man, and two jumpy castles. The
Family Fun BBQ was such a success that the
group is already making preparations for
next year!
CHBA-ER’s NextGen Committee offers
our next generation of industry leaders
the opportunity to get involved in the
Association and to learn about what it takes
to make an impact in Edmonton’s residential
construction industry.
The program has received tremendous
support through both sponsorship and
member participation. Over the next year,
the committee will host more fun and family
events, organize more educational sessions,
and further develop its mentorship program.
