then operated in the character and tendencies<br />

<strong>of</strong> Grecian poetry and music—the<br />

elegiac and the iambic measures having<br />

been introduced as rivals to the primitive<br />

hexameter, and poetical compositions<br />

having been transferred from the epical<br />
