hymenophyllum atrovirens (Sparse)<br />

Endemic filmy fern <strong>of</strong> local distribution usually found in deep shade by<br />

streams and near waterfalls (Brownsey and Smith-Dodsworth 2000) in<br />

mature forest known from several sites in this <strong>Ecological</strong> <strong>District</strong>; Waipoua<br />

(AK 185532) (SSBI O06/H015), Mataraua (SSBI O06/H013), Waima Forests<br />

(SSBI O06/H010) all O06/001, Marlborough P06/042 (SSBI P06/040), and<br />

Kaihu Forest P07/001 (SSBI P07/H001).<br />

lagenifera lanata (Sparse)<br />

Lagenifera lanata is a small herb endemic to the North Island (NZPCN<br />

2006). In this <strong>Ecological</strong> <strong>District</strong> it has been recorded from Waipoua<br />

Forest part <strong>of</strong> O06/001 (SSBI O06/H015).<br />

libocedrus plumosa kawaka (Sparse)<br />

Kawaka is tree <strong>of</strong> local, but widespread distribution in Northland, recorded<br />

from Maunganui Bluff O07/009 (Esler and Dobbins 1977), Waipoua (SSBI<br />

O06/H015), Mataraua (SSBI O06/H013) and Waima Forests (SSBI O06/<br />

H010) all O06/001, Marlborough Forest P06/042 (SSBI P06/H040), Kaihu<br />

Forest P07/001 (SSBI P07/H001) and Trounson Kauri Park O07/005 (SSBI<br />

O07/H002) in this <strong>Ecological</strong> <strong>District</strong>.<br />

Microlaena carsei (Sparse)<br />

An endemic grass reaching its northern limit in this <strong>Ecological</strong> <strong>District</strong><br />

where it is recorded from the Waipoua Forest, part <strong>of</strong> O06/001<br />

(Department <strong>of</strong> Conservation, Bioweb Threatened Plants Database, March<br />

2006), and a 1998 record by G. Jane from Trounson Kauri Park Scenic<br />

Reserve O07/005 (SSBI O07/H002).<br />

Pittosporum ellipticum (Sparse)<br />

Pittosporum ellipticum is a tree species with grows on bluffs (L. J.<br />

Forester pers. comm.) with noticeably black bark. Recorded from Waima<br />

Forest, part <strong>of</strong> O06/001 (SSBI O06/H010) in this <strong>Ecological</strong> <strong>District</strong>.<br />

Pittosporum pimeleoides subsp. pimeleoides (Sparse)<br />

Pittosporum pimeleoides subsp. pimeleoides is a small shrub which is<br />

endemic to Northland, growing to two metres with slender branches<br />

and narrow-oblong leaves crowded at tips or whorled (Poole and Adams<br />

1990). This species is usually found on dry and fairly open ridge sites;<br />

usually with mingimingi under tanekaha and kauri. Recorded from the<br />

Wairau River catchment in the Waipoua Forest, part <strong>of</strong> O06/001 in<br />

1984 and 1990 (Department <strong>of</strong> Conservation, Bioweb Threatened Plants<br />

Database, March 2006).<br />

Schizaea dichotoma (Sparse)<br />

Schizaea dichotoma is a fan fern with an uncommon distribution. In<br />

Northland it is found in lowland kauri forest (Brownsey and Smith-<br />

Dodsworth 2000) and <strong>of</strong>ten in gumland (L. J. Forester pers. comm.).<br />

It is recorded in this <strong>Ecological</strong> <strong>District</strong> from Waipoua Forest, part <strong>of</strong><br />

O06/001 (SSBI O06/H015).<br />
