loss and competition with the introduced spider Steatoda capensis<br />

(Griffiths 2000). In the <strong>Tutamoe</strong> <strong>Ecological</strong> <strong>District</strong>, the black katipo<br />

has been recorded in dunelands right along the coast from Hokianga<br />

South Head to 1 km north <strong>of</strong> Maunganui Bluff including sites O06/015<br />

and O06/027. This area has some <strong>of</strong> the best katipo habitat in Northland,<br />

although it is still threatened by modification, especially weed incursion.<br />

Forest ringlet butterfly dodonidia helmsii (Gradual Decline)<br />

The adult forest ringlet butterfly lives for only 3–4 weeks, the caterpillars<br />

feed at night on Gahnia and bush snowgrass (Crowe 1999). This butterfly<br />

was recorded in 2001 in Waima Forest (SSBI O06/H015) and there is<br />

a 2003 record from Mataraua Forest (SSBI O06/H013), both part <strong>of</strong><br />

O06/001.<br />

Beetle Syrphetodes sp. “Waipoua” (Sparse)<br />

Syrphetodes sp. “Waipoua” is a beetle recorded from the eastern side <strong>of</strong><br />

Waipoua Forest (part <strong>of</strong> O06/001) (A. Booth pers. comm.).<br />

Darkling beetle Menimus clarkei (Range Restricted)<br />

A darkling beetle which has been recorded from the Waimatenui area <strong>of</strong><br />

this <strong>Ecological</strong> <strong>District</strong> (Department <strong>of</strong> Conservation Internal Files).<br />

Ground weta hemiandrus “Otekauri” (Range Restricted)<br />

This ground weta has only been recorded from Waipoua (part <strong>of</strong> O06/001)<br />

in Northland, also known from one specimen at the Coromandel Peninsula<br />

(Department <strong>of</strong> Conservation Internal Files).<br />

Northland tusked weta Anisonra nicobarica (Sparse)<br />

In this <strong>District</strong> Northland tusked weta have been recorded from the large<br />

forest tract <strong>of</strong> Waipoua/Mataraua/Waima 006/001 and in 2005 tusked weta<br />

were recorded from Trounson Kauri Park Scenic Reserve O07/005 (SSBI<br />

O07/H002).<br />

Stag beetle Paralissotes mangonuiensis (Sparse)<br />

A stag beetle recorded from the Waipoua/Mataraua/Waima Forest<br />

continuum, O06/001.<br />

dAtA deFIcIent<br />

euconnus microcilipes<br />

Euconnus microcilipes is a tiny beetle (1.5 mm long) which has only<br />

been recorded from the Waipoua Forest (part <strong>of</strong> O06/001) where it<br />

was recorded from the leaf litter <strong>of</strong> kauri/podocarp-broadleaf forest<br />

(McGuinness 2001).<br />
