<strong>The</strong> first generation <strong>of</strong> the gods (uranus and Gaia) ruled in connection<br />

with the earliest stages <strong>of</strong> the earth’s development as <strong>for</strong>ces in a cosmology. <strong>The</strong><br />

second generation <strong>of</strong> the gods (Kronus and Rhea) were the representatives<br />

<strong>of</strong> a theogony. Zeus and the Olympians became the figures in a mythology.<br />

Everything that appeared with these divinities revealed its nature in a triad.<br />

Hence we have three leading divinities: Zeus, his son Apollo, and his daughter,<br />

Athena; three further sons <strong>of</strong> Zeus, Hermes, Ares and Hephaistus, and three
