Vegetative cells 11-15M x 65-145^1, with plane end walls; i chro-
matophorc, making 4 to 9 turns in the cell; conjugation scalariform;
tubes formed by both gametangia; receptive gametangium enlarged or
slightly inflated; sterile cells inflated, often buUiform; zygospores ellip-
soid, 2 1-27 /J. X 47-54 i^; median wall at first smooth, at maturity irreg-
ularly but distinctly punctate, yellow-brown. (PI. XXIV, Fig. 11.)

This species resembles 5. bullata Jao, but is smaller and the spore wall
is punctate.

ellipsoid, 24-30 /x X 40-52 m; median spore wall reticulate, yellow-brown.

Resembles S. hoehnei Borge in the form of the fertile cells, but has
smaller dimensions throughout and the median spore wall is reticulate, not
punctate. This description includes S. reticuleana.
