ellipsoid, 4^-46/v. x 8(S-ii8/a; median spore wall yellow-brown, scrobic-

The conjugating tubes frequently appear to have been formed by the
male gametangium, due to the growth of the wall of the receptive gametangium.

Named for Professor Ben H. Smith, Indiana State Teachers College at
Terrc Haute, who collected the type specimens, and added many new
records to the Indiana algal flora.
