2 2 1 / Tõnu Õnnepalu
■ TÕNU ÕNNEPALU (1962) /kirjanikuna Emil Tode/
olemus võiks kokkuvõetuna peituda ta pseudonyymi
vigases perekonnanimes, mis keeldub olemast “Tõde”,
“Tod” või midagi muud keele poolt lõpuni valmistatut.
Keeldub suureliselt tõeütleja või kohtuniku rollist.
Vahel tundub ka kirjanduses toimimine talle
tylikavõitu olemisviisina.
Varem yksnes narkootiliselt kauneiks looduspiltideks
peetud, vahel nihkega piibellikku sõnarytmi ja
symboolikat kasutand looming suundub illusioonitu
eluselguse poole. Pyydes taandada näivuse kiusatused,
vältida kliäeede rusu ja kaugeneda sentimentaalse
eestluse taagast, et näha olemasolu võimalikult
takistamatult. Todet tuntakse rahvusvaheliselt
prosaistina. Nyyd suundub yle tõlkepiiri ka tema
uuem luule, mille suhe romaanidega on vastastikuse
kommentaari ja laienduse seos.
See ajuti väiksel Hiiumaa saarel elav bioloogiharidusega
mees on inimese asendist, võõrandumisest ja ihadest
öelnud midagi lõikavalt selget.
The essence of TÕNU ÕNNEPALU (born 1962)
/pseudonym: Emil Tode/, may be summed up in the
linguistic imperfection of his psuedonymous surname
which refuses to be ‘Tõde’ (the Estonian for ‘truth’),
‘Tod’ (the German for 'death') or anything else readymade
by language or languages. He rejects the grand
rôle of soothsayer or judge. Sometimes even literary
activity seems to be too burdensome a way of life for
him. Õnnepalu’s poetry, formerly seen to consist mainly
of narcotically beautiful visions of nature that sometimes
made use of dislocated biblical word rhythms
and symbolism, is now moving towards a disillusioned
clarity with regard to life. He attempts to reduce the
temptations of appearance, to avoid the débris of cliché
and to distance himself from the burden of sentimental
patriotism, in order to see existence as clearly as
possible. Tode is known internationally as a prose
writer. Now his recent poetry, whose relation to his
novels is that of commentary and development,
transcends the borders of translation. This man,
who has studied biology and from time to time lives
on the small island of Hiiumaa, has made incisively
clear utterances about the human condition,
estrangement and desire.
