"That was pretty *upsettling." a. upsetting b. unsettling One of Wells' laws of speech errors states: "If the two original words contain the same sound in the same position, a blend of them will contain that sound in that position" (Wells, 1951). The previous example is just such a case, as is the "easy-go-lucky" example above. Various other examples of blends can be found in Hofstadter & Moser (1989) and in the work of Gerald Cohen (e.g. Cohen, 1987)' whose collection contains thousands of subtle and interesting examples. One finds such blends in Chinese, too, of course. I have found it useful to divide my examples into two categories: word blends and phrase blends. The following are just a few examples: 2.3.
