choices with regard to their sexuality. 249 This view is support by Smith where it<br />

was stated that:<br />

“The problem with laws and regulations, particularly in the case of a deep-rooted<br />

practice, is that, without clear enforcement mechanisms and without support of<br />

education and information, no clear effects can be expected. … Laws can play an<br />

effective role alongside information and education.” 250<br />

It is argued that virginity should not just focus on the sexual organ but the entire<br />

body and social environment. 251 The integrity, empowerment, decision-making,<br />

personal health, education and shelter of the child should be emphasized instead<br />

of the stigmatization and embarrassment often accompanied by virginity tests. 252<br />

Having ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child as well<br />

as other international law treaties aimed at protecting the human rights of<br />

children it is recommended that virginity testing be prohibited as required by<br />

international law.<br />
