<strong>Augie</strong> Nieto, the cofounder and former president and CEO of Life<br />
Fitness, was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS),<br />
also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a debilitating, untreatable, and<br />
eventually fatal motor-neuron condition, in March 2005. He recounts<br />
that development in <strong>Augie</strong>’s Quest: One Man’s Journey from Success<br />
to Significance, a book that he coauthored with T.R. Pearson, an<br />
excerpt of which appears here. Since then, insofar as possible, Nieto<br />
has struggled, successfully, to maintain a business-as-usual approach<br />
to life—dealing with ALS in the same way that he managed countless<br />
professional challenges during a long and distinguished career.<br />
His efforts to help find the cause of, and a possible cure for, ALS may<br />
eventually be counted as his most profound and far-reaching achievement.<br />
