Sometimes, it takes a single incident to send us off in a new direction.
Patti Geigel, a 38-year-old hairdresser and mother of two from
Manitowoc, Wisconsin, was happy with herself. “I’ve always been a
big person,” she says. That happiness changed when she was unable
to go on an amusement park ride with her daughter. As a result, “I
went home and started changing my life,” she asserts. That change
included joining both her local Anytime Fitness club and Weight
Watchers and, a year later, achieving a weight loss of more than
100 pounds.
Recently, Geigel was cast in a “before and after” Anytime
Fitness television commercial spot. “She came to our club looking
for a little help,” notes Mike Langley, owner of the Anytime Fitness
clubs in Manitowoc and Two Rivers. “Now she’s leading by example,
helping others. I don’t think even Patti realizes how many people
she has indirectly motivated by them hearing her story, seeing her
commercial, or looking at her before and after pictures.”
Headquartered in Hastings, Minnesota, fitness franchise company
Anytime Fitness has more than 800 locations in operation across
the U.S. and Canada. —|
The Power Behind San Diego’s Superstars
LaDainian Tomlinson
If you watched a recent episode of 60 Minutes that featured
philanthropist and San Diego Chargers superstar LaDainian
Tomlinson, you may have noticed a trainer standing quietly at
his side. The man who went unmentioned and unacknowledged
on the show, but who helps Tomlinson, a running back, make the
most of his physical assets is Todd Durkin, the owner of Fitness
Quest 10, an 8,000-square-foot personal-training, massage, and
athletic-performance facility in San Diego, California.
Durkin also works with Tomlinson’s former teammate, quarterback
Drew Brees, who now plays with the New Orleans Saints.
Durkin has a special understanding when it comes to dealing
with elite football players and their training programs, injuries,
rehab regimens, etc. He played for the European and World
Football Leagues until 1995, when a back injury sidelined him
permanently. He subsequently developed his Optimal Performance
Bodywork method, produced DVDs on the system, and taught it
across the nation. In 2002, he opened Fitness Quest 10.
Speaking of Tomlinson’s and Brees’ injuries and the rehab
programs he helped them with, Durkin says, “I know the blood,
sweat, and tears they put in to get where they’re at.” —|
