grant : "^We Understanding that owre burgh <strong>of</strong> Sel-<br />

which a thousand acres in tillage might bear a due proportion. This<br />

circumstance ascertains <strong>the</strong> antiquity and power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> burgh ; for, had<br />

this large tract <strong>of</strong> land been granted during <strong>the</strong> minority <strong>of</strong> James V.,<br />

<strong>the</strong> donation, to be effectual, must have been included in <strong>the</strong> charters<br />

<strong>of</strong> confirmation.
