From <strong>the</strong>se extracts, which care accurately copied from<br />

<strong>the</strong> original charters,* it may be safely concluded, 1st,<br />

that Selkirk was a place <strong>of</strong> importance before it was ruin-<br />

ed by <strong>the</strong> English ; and, 2d, " that <strong>the</strong> voice <strong>of</strong> merchants<br />

" had ceased in her streets," in consequence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fatal<br />

field <strong>of</strong> Flodden. But fur<strong>the</strong>r, it seems reasonable to in-<br />

fer, that so many marks <strong>of</strong> royal favour, granted within<br />

so short a time <strong>of</strong> each o<strong>the</strong>i-, evince <strong>the</strong> gratitude, as well<br />

as <strong>the</strong> compassion, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> monarch, and were intended to<br />

reward <strong>the</strong> valour, as well as to relieve <strong>the</strong> distress, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
