nese Culture and Science," with a "Chinese Studies" website located under <strong>the</strong> School's<br />

website. In addition to leading one seminar on his own current research project on Octo-<br />

ber 4, 1999, Elman also organized three winter-spring colloquia: 1) "Jesuits, Textualism,<br />

and Science in China and Europe in <strong>the</strong> 17 th<br />

and 18 th Centuries: A Roundtable Discus-<br />

sion" (January 24, 2000); 2) "Colloquium on Culture and Science in Late Traditional<br />

China" (March 17-18, 2000); and 3) "Colloquium Comparing Chinese and Greek<br />

Natural Philosophy and Science, 400 B.C.<br />

- A.D. 200" (April 21, 2000), which included<br />

presentations by Geoffrey Lloyd, Cambridge University, and Nathan Sivin, University of<br />

Pennsylvania. Elman also presented a talk entitled "Cultutal Prisons or Impartial Testing<br />

Sites? Civil Examinations in Late Imperial China," <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Friends of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>Advanced</strong> <strong>Study</strong> (March 8, 2000) and as part of <strong>the</strong> East Asian Studies Colloquium at<br />

<strong>the</strong> University of Pennsylvania (October 11, 1999).<br />

In his final <strong>year</strong> next <strong>year</strong>, Elman will organize a series of events entitled "East Asian<br />

Studies at <strong>the</strong> School of Historical Studies, 2000-2001: Seminars and Colloquia on<br />

Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese Traditional History and Civilization." His<br />

own research will focus on <strong>the</strong> influence of late imperial Chinese classical scholarship in<br />

Tokugawa, Japan (1600-1867) be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong> Meiji Restoration.<br />

PROFESSOR IRVING LAVIN continued to serve as a member of <strong>the</strong> National Committee<br />

<strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> History of Art, and as advisor to <strong>the</strong> city of Modena <strong>for</strong> a structural fantasy designed<br />

by <strong>the</strong> architect Frank Gehry, to <strong>the</strong> architect Michael Graves <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> decorative program of<br />

a new Federal Court House in Washington, and to <strong>the</strong> Storm King Art Center, Moun-<br />

tainville, NY, <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> future planning and development of that institution. Professor Lavin<br />

gave courses of lectures at <strong>the</strong> Collegio San Carlo in Modena and at <strong>the</strong> Istituto Italiano per<br />

gli Studi Filosofici in Naples, and gave a number of lectutes and papers presented at symposia,<br />

including: Blanton Museum of Art, University of Texas at Austin; Yale University; Accade-<br />

mia dei Lincei, Rome. Professor Lavin serves on <strong>the</strong> editotial boards of a number of scholar-<br />

ly journals, including Quademi d'italianistica, History of European Ideas, Art e Dossier,<br />

PaUadio, and Rivista di storia dell' architettura e restauro. His publications include books and<br />

papers in Italian and English: Santa Maria del Fiore. II duomo di Firenze e la Vergine incinta,<br />

PROFESSOR JACK E MATLOCK, Jr. delivered a Faculty lecture at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>Advanced</strong> <strong>Study</strong> on "Preparing <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> 21 st<br />

Century? World Politics Today." He also<br />

lectured at <strong>the</strong> University of Edinburgh; <strong>for</strong> World Affairs Councils in Greensboro, NC, Seat-<br />

tle, Washington, and Washington, DC; <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Santa Fe Council on International Relations;<br />

<strong>the</strong> University of Wisconsin-Eau-Claire; <strong>the</strong> National Bureau of Asian Research; <strong>the</strong> U.S.<br />

<strong>Institute</strong> of Peace; <strong>the</strong> Princeton Committee on Foreign Relations; <strong>the</strong> Miller Center at <strong>the</strong><br />

University of Virginia; and at a workshop sponsored by Sit Investments in Palm Springs. Pro-<br />

fessor Matlock was <strong>the</strong> keynote speaker <strong>for</strong> a presentation to <strong>the</strong> MIT Center <strong>for</strong> Interna-<br />

tional Studies held at <strong>the</strong> National Ptess Club in Washington, DC where he spoke on <strong>for</strong>eign<br />

policy, international relations, and national interest. He delivered <strong>the</strong> Second Annual<br />

Robert Strausz-Hupe Lecture at <strong>the</strong> Foreign Policy Research <strong>Institute</strong> in Philadelphia. He<br />
