<strong>Institute</strong> <strong>for</strong> advanced study<br />

PROFESSOR CLIFFORD GEERTZ spoke in June 1999 at a semiotics conference at <strong>the</strong><br />

lnstitut Ferdinand de Saussure Center, Archamps, Geneva; at <strong>the</strong> U.S. Embassy at Jakarta<br />

on <strong>the</strong> occasion of <strong>the</strong> 50 th anniversary of US-Indonesia relations in December 1999; at a<br />

conference on "Model Systems in <strong>the</strong> Social Sciences," Princeton History of Science<br />

Program, also in December; at a special session on his work at <strong>the</strong> Modern Language<br />

Association Meetings in Chicago, also in December; at Harvard, to <strong>the</strong> anthropology<br />

department and to <strong>the</strong> study of nationalism group in February; again at <strong>the</strong> Model Systems<br />

(in history) Workshop at Princeton University, in April 2000; and at a conference honor-<br />

ing his work in Sefrou, Morocco in May 2000. He traveled <strong>for</strong> research purposes to Indone-<br />

sia during November/December 1999 and Morocco during April/May 2000. His new book,<br />

Available Light: Anthropological Reflections on Philosophical Topics, was published in May by<br />

Princeton University Press. His earlier works The Interpretation of Cultures (1973) and<br />

Local Knowledge (1983) were reissued with new introductions in Basic Books' Classics<br />

Series. Articles published include: "Indonesia: Starting Over" (New York Review of Books),<br />

"Awas Buaya" (Mencari Demokrasi, Jakarta), "Geiger at Antioch" (The Antioch Review),<br />

"When <strong>the</strong> Poet Speaks Arabic" (To Be: 2B); "Afterword" (Interpreting Cultures, Twenry-<br />

Five Years Later, Bloomington); and "The Introduction into Anthropology of a Genuinely<br />

Historical Eye" (Journal of Victorian Culture). In July, exhausted by all of this, Professor<br />

Geertz retired.<br />

In October, PROFESSOR EMERITUS ALBERT O. HIRSCHMAN was <strong>the</strong> recipient of<br />

The Order of <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Cross bestowed upon him by <strong>the</strong> Brazilian Government. This<br />

decoration was decided on by <strong>the</strong> President of Brazil, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, and<br />

was presented to Professor Hirschman by <strong>the</strong> Ambassador, Rubens Barbosa, at <strong>the</strong> Brazilian<br />

Embassy in Washington, DC.<br />

Professor Hirschman spent one week (March 4-8) in Budapest and presented a paper on<br />

"The Paradoxes of Unintended Consequences" in honor of George Soros, <strong>the</strong> President<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Central European University in Budapest and <strong>the</strong> principal benefactor, on his sev-<br />

entieth birthday.<br />

In March/April, he spent four weeks in Berlin at <strong>the</strong> Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. The<br />

Rektor of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>, Wolf Lepenies, gave a speech in Professor Hirschman 's honor in<br />

celebration of his 85' 1 ' birthday. In April, Professor Hirschman spent a week in Rome.<br />

<strong>the</strong> Albert O. Hirschman Chair in Economics was inaugurated at <strong>the</strong> Insti-<br />

tute. The celebration was attended by James D. Wolfensohn, President, The World<br />

Bank, and Chairman of <strong>the</strong> Board, <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Advanced</strong> <strong>Study</strong>; and by Ronaldo H.<br />

Schmitz and Wilfried Guth, Deutsche Bank AG, Trustees of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Advanced</strong><br />

<strong>Study</strong>, who had contributed to <strong>the</strong> establishment of <strong>the</strong> Chair.<br />

Professor Hirschman has been notified that his book, Exit, Voice, and Loyalty, (Harvard<br />

University Press) will be printed in Chinese sometime next <strong>year</strong>.<br />

PROFESSOR JOAN SCOTT gave <strong>the</strong> Frederick Art: lecture .n Oberlin College; a<br />

Sawyer Seminar at Columbia University; and a paper .it a conference on contemporary<br />

French politics at Rutgers. She taught a short (two-week) course at <strong>the</strong> Central Euro-<br />

pean University in Budapest. She served on <strong>the</strong> Visiting Committee on Diversity ai<br />

Brown<br />

I fniversity and she continued to chair <strong>the</strong> Committee on Academic Freedom and<br />
