Ahead of next month’s Olympics, Matthew Lee goes exploring PHOTOGRAPHY: MARLEEN DANIELS TRAVEL LONDON It was once the case that tourists only visited Stratford if they had been aiming for the birthplace of William Shakespeare but got on the wrong train. Th is year, however, this once shabby corner of east London boasts a shiny new stadium, a gargantuan shopping centre and, of course, the biggest sporting event in the world. And while large-scale investment may have transformed one of the poorest parts of London, on the other side of the River Lea — a javelin throw from the stadium’s western wall — the atmosphere is very diff erent. It’s claimed that Hackney Wick is home to more artists per capita than anywhere else in the world. Around 700 artists’ studios are hidden among the factories and warehouses of this old industrial zone. In their varying states of disrepair, these buildings initially appear imposing. But get up close to the brick and concrete and you’ll fi nd a restless cultural scene. Th e centre of activity is the Mother Studios, opened in 2001 by Joanna Hughes, whose fruitless search for aff ordable workspace ended when she chanced upon Hackney Wick. “It was rough round the edges then, and no developer would touch it,” she recalls. “Th e atmosphere was industrial and unforgiving but perfect for artists, so I opened my studios, put up adverts and held an open day — there was a mad rush for spaces. It’s been full ever since.” Th e pioneering Elevator Gallery, reached by entering a stark red lift , occupies Mother’s attic while downstairs, 43 functional studios are used by over 50 creatives.
