WHAT TO SEE
Medieval meander
Wander the medieval lanes in
Schnoor, with its many shops
and the Kunsthalle Bremen
(kunsthalle-bremen.de). A climb
up the tower at Cathedral of
St Peter (stpetridom.de) in the
Old Town offers a bird’s-eye
view of the city. Next to the
former defensive moat, Am
Wall park is a charming place to
relax on a summer’s evening.
WHERE TO EAT
Beer in the garden
Cafes and restaurants line the
Schlachte along the Weser
river. Summer means beer
gardens on the water:
Feldmann’s Bierhaus
(feldmanns-bierhaus.de) serves
genuine Bremen cooking, while
Paulaner’s (Schlachte 30; +49
421 1690691) specializes in
Bavarian. Im Viertel (Sielwall 2A;
+49 421 79432688) offers
traditional German dishes and
homemade cakes.
WHERE TO SHOP
Craving Kluten
Schnoor is a tangle of tight
lanes full of boutiques.
Böttcherstrasse (see Don't
miss) caters to upscale
shoppers. Markets are out on
most of the squares around the
Town Hall. Hachez (hachez.de),
a chocolatier near the Town
SUNNING ON THE SCHLACHTE
Hall, is well worth a visit to buy
Bremen's traditional Kluten,
cubes of peppermint, partly
covered in chocolate.
HOW TO GET THERE
KLM operates four direct daily
fl ights to Bremen Airport from
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

Architectural
gem
Between Marktplatz and the
river, the Böttcherstrasse is
crowded with an impressive
collection of Gothic and Art
Nouveau architecture. Once
the home of barrel makers,
the street was transformed
between 1922 and 1931 by
coffee magnate Ludwig
Roselius and is now home to
several art museums,
workshops, bars, restaurants,
shops and an historic
Glockenspiel that chimes at
regular intervals.
