Hopping Good Fun
From elaborate parades to pagan games, Easter
celebrations in Europe are full of surprises
Easter Eggstravaganza
DONCASTER/
SHEFFIELD
The famous
country house
of Chatsworth,
nestled among the
rolling hills of the
Peak District, is only
30 minutes from
Sheffi eld, and the
The beautiful 16thcentury
manor
house, easily
recognisable as
the setting for
fi lms such as The
Duchess and Pride
and Prejudice,
offers an itinerary
of Easter-themed
activities for
all the family.
Highlights include
face painting, egg
painting, a parade
and, of course,
the egg hunt.
Thousands of eggs
are dotted around
the grand estate
in procession by a
families get stuck in
searching the fi elds
The hunt takes
daily from 1–5 April.
Semana Santa
MALAGA
Holy week is the
most important
religious event
in Spain. While
Málaga’s
celebrations are not
as sombre as those
in other cities, the
public still pays its
respects to scenes
of the Passion of
Christ displayed on
fl oats during the
Pomlázkas
PRAGUE
One of the more
unusual Easter
customs takes
place in the Czech
Republic on Easter
Monday. Boys gather
up willow branches
(pomlázkas) and go
from house to house
lightly whipping girls
on their legs. It may
sound barbaric,
but the whipping is
elaborate Easter
parades. As part of
the processions,
candle bearers dress
in white robes and
hoods (capirote)
and large fl oats
(weighing up to fi ve
tonnes) make their
way through the
city, after which a
jubilant fi esta rounds
off the weekend.
meant to be more
a symbolic gesture
than a punishment.
The custom dates
back to pagan times
and is supposed to
chase away illness
and bad spirits, as
well as bestowing
beauty, health and
vivacity. In return,
girls give the boys
beautifully painted
eggs or chocolate.
