48 DIRECTORY OF ACTING PIECES Recommended acting pieces Winners, Episode One Page reference: 14-18 Opening line: JOE: ‘Come on! Cut it out, will you! That’ll do!’ Closing line: MAG: ‘A holy-cost, by God.’ Casting: 1 male and 1 female Characters: Mag and Joe Approximate length: 8 minutes Comments: A good scene for two actors. It offers the opportunity to use accent, movement and mimicry. This scene establishes the relationship between the young lovers, Mag and Joe. We see the contrast in their personalities and gain an insight into their predicament. Mag is pregnant. Both she and Joe have been expelled from school. They meet on the top of Ardnageeha to study for their final exams which they have been allowed to sit despite the disgrace that they have brought upon themselves. We are introduced to their oppressors: the Church, their teachers, their parents, and the people who live in their straightlaced community. DRAMA
Winners, Episode One Page reference: 21-26 Opening line: MAG: ‘Joe, d’you think my legs have got thick, my body gross, my facial expression passive to dull, and my eyes lack-lustre?’ Closing line: JOE: ‘What in the name of God does it mean?’ Casting: 1 male and 1 female Characters: Mag and Joe Approximate length: 8 minutes DIRECTORY OF ACTING PIECES Comments: Mag’s prattle is indicative of her insecurity. We clearly see her vulnerability as well as the love that she feels for Joe. Joe on the other hand lashes out at Mag and challenges her romantic view of the future. This reveals his confusion and anger at the prospect of being forced into marriage and becoming a father at the age of 17 when he has aspirations to do something more with his life. We see his vulnerability. Their argument is quickly curtailed as Mag pretends to go into labour. We see Mag use her false labour pains to manipulate Joe in order to exert control over him. Once Joe recovers from his shock he buries himself in his books. Mag goes back to her melodramatic tales. We finish this Episode with a picture of Joe’s conformity and Mag’s romanticism. DRAMA 49
