In 1997, the total coffee area of 869,158 hectares comprised 551,480 farms averaging<br />

1.5 hectares of coffee. <strong>Coffee</strong> is grown more intensively in the six departments of the<br />

central coffee belt (“eje cafetero”), which account for over 60% of the total coffee<br />
