PC5204 Minister as Counselor
This course is based on the assumption that ministers are expected to give counsel
in a variety of situations and contexts. These include, but are not limited to,
counseling individuals who are experiencing personal distress. The first half of
the course focuses on the “how-to’s” of giving counsel (creating an active listening
environment, constructing a conversation, thinking systemically, interpreting
stories, and managing boundaries). The second half expands on this “how-to”
focus by exploring various other topics and themes relevant to pastoral counseling,
including reframing methods, biblical forms in relation to grief, premarital, and
marital counseling, caring through the funeral, the pastoral as an agent of hope
and other pastoral images.

elective requirement.
