PR5370 Preaching to Shape a Practicing Church
This preaching course focuses on crafting sermons that seek, both in their theological
claims and in their rhetorical strategies, to equip a congregation to “jump the
gap” between Lord’s Day worship and the Monday-to-Saturday world, imaginatively
and through faith-grounded action. Readings include practical ecclesiology,
theological and rhetorical studies of imagination, public issues preaching theory,
and practice theory. Written work will include bi-weekly response papers, exegesis
of preaching contexts and biblical texts, and four sermons (accompanied by exegesis),
each designed for a specific congregation context. At least one sermon (and
possibly two) will be preached in class, depending on enrollment.
