he wine industry is a critical driver for economic
growth and job creation – two priorities outlined
by government. It is the country’s second largest
exporter of agricultural products and contributes
R26 billion (2.2%) to the gross domestic product. With
279 000 workers, it has a job multiplier factor of 12: for
every R1 million invested, 12 new jobs are created.
The importance of a profitable and sustainable wine
industry can therefore not be overstated by VinPro and
its wine producer members.
While the wine industry is under more financial pressure
than ever before – due to sharp rising production
costs, international and domestic market pressure – a

records and align all costs and practices with the
wine goal of a specific block. But most of all, they are
plugged into a network of information transfer, staying
on top of the latest viticultural and technological
developments.
In its quest for a sustainable and participative wine
producer community, VinPro assists these members
in streamlining their businesses from the viticultural
practices to finances and BEE. VinPro’s shareholding
in Vititec and FarmMS ensures top quality plant material
and specialised information management systems
going forward.
Through liaison with Government, VinPro also voices
its members’ concerns on issues such as liquor legislation,
excise and illicit trade.
VinPro further collaborates with other wine industry
role-players to create a platform for information transfer,
such as the VinPro/Winetech Technical Information
Day and a discussion by our BEE specialist at the
workshop on Sustainable Transformation on 20 April,
which are both not to be missed.
The fact that the Bien Donné Agri Cape Week 2012
for the Wine, Fruit, Vegetable & Red Meat Industries
brings together government, wine industry organisations
and research institutes for the open transfer of
ideas and information, complements VinPro’s actions
and is therefore a crucial initiative on the wine industry’s
calendar.
